Forged Steel Valves are classified by type, design variations and function. Forged Steel Valves can also be classified by material, end connections and pressure-temperature ratings.



The material classification generally refers to the valve body material such as bronze, iron, steel, stainless steel and plastic. The valve body may be produced with one material and the trim, may or may not be made of the same material.



Valve trim is exposed to flow media and may be made of a different material than the valve body. The trim is normally more corrosion resistant than the valve body, so that corrosion is less likely to occur at the valve seating area.



The earliest known types of Forged Steel Valves were plug Forged Steel Valves, which were first made of wood. During the industrial revolution, metallic gate and globe Forged Steel Valves, along with plug Forged Steel Valves, were widely used. It wasn’t until rubber compounding and plastic were developed that quarter-turn Forged Steel Valves were widely used in our industry.



The valve is actually stated by the NPS of the valve end connection. You should know that NPS is the abbreviation for Nominal Pipe Size. It refers to the named size of the pipe. The NPS of the valve end connections must always match the NPS of the line in which it is to be installed.



The valve material and the line size will determine the type of end connection. The end connections refer to the ends of the valve body, which are connected to pipe ends. There are a number of different types of end connections available on today’s Forged Steel Valves.



Each type of valve material has pressure and temperature limits. If the valve is exposed to pressures and temperatures exceeding the specified limits, the valve will not work properly.



When pressure or temperature limits have been exceeded there is danger of damaging or ruining the valve.

A protective device designed primarily for connection between a conductor of an electrical system and ground to limit the magnitude of transient overvoltages on equipment. A lightning arrester is really a voltage-Surge arrester.



The valve arrester consists of disks of zinc oxide material that exhibit low resistance at high voltage and high resistance at low voltage. By selecting an appropriate configuration of disk material, the arrester will conduct a low current of a few milliamperes at normal system voltage. During conditions of lightning or switching surge overvoltages, the surge current is limited by the circuit; and for the magnitudes of current that can be delivered to the arrester location, the resulting voltage will be limited to controlled values, and to safe levels as well, when insulation levels of equipment are coordinated with the surge arrester protective characteristics.



A typical surge arrester consists of disks of zinc oxide material sized in cross-sectional area to provide desired energy discharge capability, and in axial length proportional to the voltage capability. The disks are then placed in porcelain enclosures to provide physical support and heat removal, and sealed for isolation from contamination in the electrical environment. A potential target for a lightning strike, such as a television antenna, is attached to the terminal labeled A in the photograph. Terminal E is attached to a long rod buried in the ground. Ordinarily no current will flow between the antenna and the ground because there is extremely high resistance between B and C, and also between C and D. The voltage of a lightning strike, however, is many times higher than that needed to move electrons through the two air gaps. The result is that electrons go through the Lightning arrester rather than traveling on to the television set and destroying it.



A lightning arrester may be a [spark gap] or may have a block of a semi-conducting material such as silicon carbide or zinc oxide. Some spark gaps are open to the air, but most modern varieties are filled with a precision gas mixture, and have a small amount of radioactive material to encourage the gas to ionize when the voltage across the gap reaches a specified level. Other designs of lightning arresters use a glow-discharge tube (essentially like a neon glow lamp) connected between the protected conductor and ground, or voltage-activated solid-state switches called varistors or MOVs.



The device



Lightning arresters built for power substation use are impressive devices, consisting of a porcelain tube several feet long and several inches in diameter, typically filled with disks of zinc oxide. A safety port on the side of the device vents the occasional internal explosion without shattering the porcelain cylinder.



Lightning arresters are rated by the peak current they can withstand, the amount of energy they can absorb, and the breakover voltage that they require to begin conduction. They are applied as part of a lightning protection system, in combination with air terminals and bonding.

Reliability is the most important property of an insulator whether it is a polymeric (composite) insulator or ceramic one. The reliability of an insulator depends upon its electrical and mechanical strengths. With the advent of modern manufacturing, mechanical molding and fixture technique, the mechanical strength is quite reliable. However the electrical strength over decades is not fully guaranteed. The modern style polymeric insulators were introduced about 25 years ago with most recent version about 13 years ago. The reason for this was not failure of ceramic insulators, but the other benefits such as 90% weight reduction, better pollution performance and low associated costs of polymeric insulators over ceramic ones.

Experience of outdoor insulation started from the introduction of telegraphic lines. The pin and cap type insulators have been used since the last quarter of the 18th century. These insulators are very reliable. Glass and porcelain insulators were the only type available before the introduction of newer polymeric insulators and thus had fully ruled over the market till late second half of the 20th century. The Composite insulator has a fiber rod structure covered with weather resistant rubbers and fillers and fitted with end fittings. Such a type of insulator is also called composite insulator.

The most critical thing to be considered in outdoor insulators is the interface between the solid insulting body and the surrounding air. The problem appears at the interface because it is the interfering point of air and the solid insulator. This problem arises due to the effects of pollution, rain, dust, salt, corona, arcing over surfaces, nitric acid in air, etc.

These things increase the leakage current and deteriorate its performance. Surfaces of insulating bodies were therefore coated with glazed material for glass and porcelain insulators, and organic or semi-organic polymer rubbers for composite insulators.

A typical composite insulator is composed of a glass fiber reinforced (GFR) epoxy or polyester core (rod), attached with metal end-fittings. This is the load bearing structure. GFR plastics are mechanically very strong but are not able to bear the outdoor environmental effects. The presence of dirt and moisture in combination with electrical stress causes the material to degrade by tracking and erosion. So the rod is covered by a coating that protects it from outside stresses such as rain, salt, fog, pollution, etc. This coating is referred to as housing.
