Revisiting Vision Cone; Better Ideas to Incorportate User Awareness

Does everyone remember when Madden tried the Vision Cone?

In an effort to tie the awareness of the QB into reading the field while playing EA added a vision area. Good QBs had big areas and other QBs like Vick had small ones. You couldn't throw to the WR unless he was in your vision cone. It was based on the concept that higher awareness QBs had better vision of the field and they wanted to do something to keep the user QBs awareness relevant. It was a good idea in order to help prevent guys from just picking QBs with big arms and lousy heads but it ultimately failed. It failed because the cone on the field looked kind of dumb and it made the gameplay frustrating for many gamers. But the idea of trying to incorporate awareness ratings while playing was a good idea.

I've been talking about this on NCAA Strategies and there have been some good ideas. What do you guys think?

My idea was to tie opposing DBs coverage ability to the user QB awareness. I'd like to boost/penalize coverage ratings one point for every five points you are away from 80. If a QB like Peyton Manning is a 99 awareness, then opposing DB coverage would drop 4 points. If a QB like Drew Stanton plays with an awareness of 50, opposing DBs would get a 6 point boost (80-50=30 / 5 = 6). It's not exactly sim but it would produce sim like results. I think a similar system could be applied to your OL run blocking depending on your RB awareness but that's another discussion.

One person suggested awareness should be more of a consistency thing where if playing on the road or tough situations their accuracy ratings take a hit.

One person suggested blurring the field slightly depending on the QB awareness. I don't think people want to see a blurry field while playing though.

BEST IDEA
I think the best idea though may be a tweak of a suggestion from another poster. I think a very simple solution that would take almost no work would be to just randomly assign different icons to your receivers after the snap based on awareness. A guy like Peyton Manning or Sam Bradford would always have his icons be the same. The X receiver would always be the X receiver. But maybe a lousy QB would have his icons switched once in awhile. Instead of the X receiver always being X, maybe they become the Y after the snap once in awhile. This would cause you to take longer to read the field sometimes. I think it's a pretty great idea. This should only change for the secondary receivers though. Every QB knows his primary receivers and those icons should stay the same. Nobody wants to throw a quick slant and then throw to the wrong person.

I think they should allow you to recognize plays faster with high awr QB's. Think kind of like the Batter's Eye in Mlb 2k10. So it would flash "blitz" or "man" or "cover 2" or something of that ilk. Because that is what awareness actually does for a qb - allows them to read the plays faster. The lower you awr, the less often the cpu would read the play for you, and you'd have to do it yourself.

Now THAT is a pretty awesome idea!

And it's something that could be toggled on or off in the options menu as well.

Simple yet effective!

Pre-Play you can have the right icons so that way you can do audibles, but post snap then it all changes.

That's also a pretty good idea too.
