This is from an ESPN insider blog section..... The "anti-Madden curse" By Tyler Korn, ESPN Stats & Info While the “Madden Curse” has been well-chronicled over the past decade, there is one video game cover athletes may still want to grace. That video game is Sony’s MLB: The Show. Since its creation in 2006, the cover athlete for the game has had a great year in terms of salary compensation. Each athlete that has appeared on the cover went on to sign a contract worth at least $40 million that year or the following year. This year’s cover features Twins catcher Joe Mauer, who just signed the fourth richest contract in baseball history and the richest ever for a catcher. MLB: THE SHOW COVER ATHLETE, SINCE 2006 ============== Terms of Contract Year Signed '10 Joe Mauer ------------ 8-yr/$184M -------- 2010 '09 Dustin Pedroia -------- 6-yr/$40.5M ----- 2009 '08 Ryan Howard -------- 3-yr/$54M ---------- 2009 '07 David Wright -------- 6-yr/$55M ---------- 2007 '06 David Ortiz --------- 4-yr/$52M ----------- 2007 |
