I've posted my thoughts at OS in random posts here and there, I'll try to sum up my feelings in one spot here. Be warned, this may get quite unorganized. In general, I like the game. It is what it is, a decent, fun to play football game with pretty serious problems on the field that you can either choose to look past or have them bother you to hell. On the field it does not compare to APF 2k8 and to be honest EA football games probably won't compare for many more years if ever. I really don't have a lot of positive things to say that I couldn't have said last year or the year before, etc. Teambuilder is pretty cool I just wish I didn't have to be plugged into Live to see my custom logos and such. The CPU AI seems a bit better this year in terms of play calling. No more stupid QB choice for a 5 yard loss for every team that you play. The CPU seems quite good to me this year and I've been playing on Varsity in my dynasty and getting good games with realistic stats and 7 min quarters. I like to run the ball and the run game is just decent. If the run block slider didn't affect the kickoffs so much I would raise it quite a bit. I had a lot of fun using Georgia Tech and running the flexbone. I like the way we can choose uniforms now. Sliders work real well for the most part. For some negatives (and there are alot) -Passes are thrown 100 MPH. I have no idea why this is done but it immediately lets you know this is an arcade game trying to be a sim. -Blocking is pretty bad on both sides. Lots of weird movements from the OL and lots of missed blocks and assignments. Lots of instances of defensive players running circles around the OL. Some suction blocking. Way too many instances where the QB has 10 seconds to throw in the pocket. -CPU jerky running movements. The CPU misses holes in the run game and fails to use speed burst it seems at times. -There really are only 2 speeds. Jogging and full speed. This is a core issue with the engine IMO and the game won't improve much until there is some acceleration. -Missed tackle animations are horrid. If I do a spin move the CPU defenders either miss me by 6 feet or they turn and run the other way. There is also the slippery missed tackle......which leads me to... -WHEN A TACKLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING BROKEN, ALL THE OTHER DEFENDERS SLOW DOWN, STAND, AND WATCH. The ball carrier then immediately goes back to full speed and nobody catches him. THIS IS TO BLAME FOR 80% OF BIG PLAYS. I don't know why nobody else will talk about this. In real football, those defenders come and finish the play. -The passing game is just clunky in general. While I'm able to get some passes into the ground this year, most complete passes are zoomed 100 MPH and then the receiver is tackled before taking a step. Not much YAC most of the time unless it's a deep lobbed pass. -CPU defenders are too good against the pass. Forget about trying to throw a comeback or an out route unless you are feeling lucky because they will warp to the ball and make you pay. I moved to Varsity because of this and it is a bit better but still bad. The only really decent routes that you can count on most of the time are slants and in routes. This kills the passing game and gives you very few options most of the time. Also these routes can be abused. There is just no balance in the passing game. -Too many turnovers are taken to the house for 6 points. Still a problem. Fumbles are routinely run back 90 yards for a score. Offensive players take horrible angles and never tackle anyone. This happens WAY too often. -Kickoffs are taken back for 6 points too often as well. Run blocking on 50, gameplan on normal, seeing too many from the CPU on VARSITY. Combine this with the fumbles and INT returns and you just get some crazy games. FIU scored 50 points on me... -Pursuit angles in general are better than they were originally last year but still bad. This is really killing the game. -Punt returns are too easy when you call for a punt block. Have 30 yards of space in front of you when you catch the ball. Otherwise punt returns are too hard. -Recruiting is horrible IMO. I can't stand the repetitiveness of it. Maybe it's because I'm older now but recruiting was fun when it first came out now it's just too complicated and tedious. Also, apparently dynasty has some whacked out progression that renders it useless anyway. -A whole slew of other annoying things. You guys know what they are. Presentation is bad, other stupid gameplay things, rosters, etc. I won't get into the smaller things. I will say that I'm still enjoying the game somewhat. I got it for cheap so I'm not mad but might be if I had paid $65 for it. Last year I was initially positive about the game when lots of impressions were negative. This year my initial impressions were "meh" when lots of impressions were positive. It's basically the same game as '09 with a few tweaks. |

That's a nice write-up Mike. I totally agree about the passes being 100 mph. They are much faster than 09 although in 09 you had arm strength tied to the accuracy slider. I play with both human and cpu at 40 and the passes seem to be a real nice speed in 09 with that. My biggest problem with it is how hard it makes playing defense manually. I'm still surprised at some areas in '10 that got worse. The surround sound took a hit, the menus brought back the terrible lag of 08 and they didn't give us a choice in the camera view. I just don't get these decisions. As for pursuit angles, I'm one of the few that didn't think they were that terrible in 09. Yes, they weren't good but a far bigger problem was the greased pig animation where the defender would just whiff and fall down. And I still saw a similar animation in 10. I think the defenders standing around on plays while someone is being tackled might be fixed next year when they get full pro-tak and 3-9 man gang tackles. Right now I don't think that area changed at all for '10 other than the breaking out of a tackle system. 09 had two man gang tackles and 10 didn't improve upon that. Overall, I didn't see a massive improvement in 10 like some people seem to see. But I'm not sure we will see the massive improvement in Madden many are also expecting to see. Adam Thompson did say the second patch for NCAA 10 is loaded to where he's never seen so much improvements. A lot of stuff Madden fine-tuned after NCAA went gold are apparently going to be included in the 2nd patch. Plus you can play with the player lock camera online after the second patch. Adding the 09 camera back in appears to be dead and not happening. Edited by Rudy, Aug 3 2009, 06:59 AM.

Hey DJ, I saw you try J-Unit's sliders on OS. His thoughts are pretty similar to mine on things overall. But you are a better gamer than me so it's no surprise you found them on the easy side. |

After playing Madden and NCAA-I'd say I have 2 pretty good football games here. They both have a different feel. NCAA 10 is still a keeper in my book and I am still going with my 2-0 Texas Longhorns season. The Show doesn't have much of a chance to be played at this time-due to my extremely limited playing time. That's messed up, for as much as i like baseball, football is my first love when it comes to sports and will always be. |
