Alright, so my first game is in the books, and to be honest, I had a lot of fun (until the end, which I'll get to). I played Oregon State (cpu) vs. Oregon (me). This doesn't seem like last year's game to me. It could just be the "newness", but hey, if there's "newness", then it isn't the same as last years game.

First thing that stood out was the pass rush. While it isn't where it should be (hopefully sliders will work), with my D-line at agressive I felt on default All-American, it was better than last years with adjusted sliders. I only got 2 sacks, but I got some good pressure on the QB, and I was using a TON of zone-heavy, 4-man rush defense. That's my style though. I'm not a huge pressure guy. But I got some good hits on the QB. The wobbly ball when the QB gets hit when throwing may be a bit overdone - my only int was a wobbler that went right into my DT's hands.

I really like the O-Line/D-Line interaction. There is a real pocket. Playing with Oregon (using Masoli), if I tried to scramble around to the outside, I got stuffed. My best bet was stepping up and getting my yards that way. The ends will keep outside contain when they rush the qb, like they should. Using a D-Lineman was more fun too. I rushed with an end (I was using an LB on run downs, and DE on pass downs), ripped to the outside of the RT, and came in and nailed the QB. Basically speed rushed in. It was nice. I got caught going upfield too far on some run plays though and it cost me.

I kind of liked the player lock, but part of me didn't like it. I felt like I was more in the game, and on run plays it was awesome. But if the cpu threw away from me, I had no control. I'm iffy on it. It might have just been my imagination, but I seemed to get a worse pass rush when I was in player lock. The CPU seemed to run a little better though. I had one drive where they had 9 carries for 45 yards, including 2 carries for 18 yards from the backup. But the backup never played again, and the starter only had 58 yards on 26 carries. So the CPU needs a boost in the running game, at least on All-American.

Presentation seemed okay to me. It's much more of an on-the-field feel. I've got to be honest, I wasn't paying attention to the announcers at all; they were just background noise. The review that said cheerleaders are always dressed like it's 80 must have seen something I didn't, since my cheerleaders were all wearing long sleeves and such, the same as last year. The band didn't play as often, being replaced by the drumline, which I thought was awesome. Having the drumline play, especially on big drives, just jacked up the presentation for me. Progressive lighting also helped do that - when you play a late afternoon game, and the entire field is in shadows and you're playing under the lights for that last part of the game, that's awesome. A great addition. I thought the grey sleeves thing would bother me, but it really didn't. I was suprised by that.

I don't think I saw any replays, but I typically skip them anyway. On most games, I turn them off if I can (except on MLB 2k9 - I leave them on there, for some reason). So that's not a big loss for me. I really wish they would add more stat overlays, that'd be big, and have it be important stats, season stats, game stats, situational stats. That's missing big time.

Penalties looked good. I maxed them all out and got a ton. I actually need to tone back holding some. 9 penalties for 100 yards for me and 7 for 65 for the cpu. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Now to the ending. It had been a great game. A defensive struggle. They started out with a 3 and out, and I came back with an 11 play FG drive. 3-0 me. I get that int by me DT, go three and out, FG, 6-0 me. We trade possesions for a while, and on OSU's 3rd possesion since my score, they cap off a 12-play, 59 yd drive with a 14-yd pa pass that they totally got me to bite on (I was playing the MLB). They ran 9 times for 45 yards. I threw my only int when I tried to force it where it shouldn't go, and they made me pay. They turned that to a FG, so it's 10-6 OSU. I hit a FG to make it 10-9 OSU two drives later. After trading more punts, I finally take the lead with 1:14 left with a FG. I'm up 12-10.

So far it's been a great game. It's been back and forth, and there's been some great defense. I should be thrilled, right? Not quite.

So Oregon St. gets the ball back and is moving, in part because I switched to loose zones from the tight ones I had been using all game. They get all the way down to the 26 yd-line and called a timeout with :03 left. I know what you're thinking. "Oh, that's why the ending sucked. He lost the game. Okay, that's not so bad." <Insert Game Show Buzzer Here> Wrong. Becuase they don't hit the FG. In fact, they don't even attempt it. They chuck it into the endzone where it falls incomplete.

I've never had a win feel so cheap. That is a major flaw.

DJ,

That's very surprising that they didn't go for the FG. And that's really not cool since the talk has been how much smarter the AI is at chewing the clock, kneel downs, etc.

Outside of that, it was great. They stuck with the run, kept me off balance, and mixed up the coverages and blitzes on defense. But that was horrible.

By the way, cpu QB play wasn't dominant. I think the OSU starter went 14 of 31, 149 yd, 1 td, 1 int. His back up was 4 of 5 (the starter got knocked out of the game on their last drive)

I HATED Robo QB in the 09 football games last year. That's good to hear it was toned down. I don't mind a drive where a guy goes 5/5 but when it was 4/5 every drive the entire game that sucked.

I was running tight zones most the game, and I think that might've had something to do with it. There's more of a chance of getting beat deep, but it really takes care of the short stuff. And players seem to be more aware of the first down marker. I saw a lot of different tackle animations of a guy barely getting brought down right before the sticks.

And the cpu going deep, I saw it a couple times. Still not a lot. But like I said, there was a ton of cover-3 going on. When I blitzed is when they took their shots deep. The AI does seem improved. I was playing on AA, and I only put up 12 points. There's no way that happens on 09. I put up at least 30, maybe 40, on that D.
