This guy was a great football player. As hard nosed and intense as they come. Maybe a little dirty but I've never really seen him cheap shot anybody. He had some interesting things to say in a recent interview. He's retiring and will join the NBC Studios for Sunday Night football.

Here are just a couple quotes:

On how some critics see him being imported to be Mr. Rip Job:

"I'm not about that. I played for a long time. I know the other side, the players' families, their moms, their kids, their wives. I'm not there to be critical of players as my sole purpose. My job is to be honest and not necessarily to butcher anyone. But if the truth needs to be told, I'm going to tell it. A lot of guys may not like it. I may have to criticize Tedy Bruschi or Richard Seymour or Tom Brady -- very good friends of mine. But if you don't want to be criticized, go out and play well. I had to deal with the same thing."

On his reputation as a dirty player:

"This is football in the National Football League. I hit a guy with my forearm in his throat or his chest area, and they're trying to fine me. It's football! It's not my fault if the guy curls up like a little girl because he doesn't want to get hit. Are you kidding me? And then I get hit with a $120,000 fine because I hit Jerry Rice. Do you think I'm going to let Jerry Rice catch a slant route in the end zone? I don't care what it costs me, I'm going to try to knock his head off.

"Football now is turning into a soft, pansy sport. This is not volleyball! This is not tennis! This is some of the biggest, fastest, strongest men in the world. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I went out on my own terms. It won't bother me anymore ... They need to put some more defensive players in that NFL front office. [NFL director of football operations and finemeister] Gene Washington is an offensive guy. Do you think he wants to turn on the TV and see his fellow receivers get their head knocked off? He never liked me in the first place. But that's fine. They need to put defensive players in the office so we won't have such a biased opinion from one guy."

Rodney hit hard and would do what other guys do. Take a pop shot here and there when Refs aren't looking. Not everyone that plays the sport of Football is a good guy.

I agree on protecting the QBs.
I agree on not having cut blocks and chop blocks at the knees.

That being said, Football isn't about being a sport as much as it a business. So the NFL is protecting it's employees.

Good points.

It's also a dangerous ledge to tread when it comes to allowing defensive players certain freedom's.

In regards to wide receivers, they're defenseless a lot of times, while defenders almost always do the hitting.
I'm sure if this was more of a transition game where defenders had to be on the other side of the ball, they wouldn't be so inclined to take guys heads off when a wideout is in a vulnerable position. You need to protect guys from dirty hits.

That's why I have a lot of respect for receivers who will make those catches knowing they'll be creamed. I wonder how many safety's and cornerbacks would do the same? It's an easy game when 'brick, don't hit back'.

He gave Trent Green a horrible cheap-shot in the back of the knees in a freaking pre-season game and ended his season and altered his career immeasurably. He was blocked out of the play and crawled on his hand and knees and lunged into the back of Green's knees. IN A PRE-SEASON GAME! It was as horrible a cheap shot as I have ever seen and i have despised him ever since. Yes, Kurt Warner came in, became one of the all-time great stories in NFL history and led my Rams to a Super Bowl Title. But what Harrison did to Trent Green and what he says about it now (he laughs and says St. Louis ought to be grateful) show what a class A asshole he is. I wonder what Trent Green and his family think of Rodney Harrison. I was so glad when he was busted for steroids and when he got hurt. You reap what you sow, Rodney.
