Ok, I've had mixed feelings about Darkfall since it launched yesterday. In the brief time I've spent playing, I've already felt like this game could be one of the greats. I was having trouble getting my hands on gear and gold seeing as there were so many people fighting the mobs in the starter area so I decided to go exploring just to see what I could see. I ran pretty much due south from the starting city (so as not to get lost) and happened across a few abandoned forts and ruins. I didn't see ANY mobs, just some wildlife here and there (mostly birds). Suddenly I started getting hit by some sort of flying green ball.... Since this was during the whole sync issue I'm assuming that the creature was simply invisible. I started to run away when I saw a tombstone over by a wall at some nearby ruins. I ran over, sheathed my weapon, and pressed F to see what was there... I found a virtual newbie treasure trove of goodies! Armor, weapons, staves, gold, harvesting/crafting tools, etc.... The entire time I was still being attacked by an invisible creature and was down to about 10% hp. I am guessing I could have gotten out of there a bit faster, but I was clumsily trying to move things from the tombstone to my bag so I'm sure I was doing it much more slowly than possible. Anyhow, I looted the last bit of stuff, pressed shift and hauled ass out of there. I managed to escape with under 5% hp left.....and with a bag full of loot! It was completely AWESOME! You see, that is what is going to make this game great. I couldn't do what I wanted at first, so I left the area....got my head kicked in by a mob...and got out alive with Loot, Skillups, and shortness of breath! Its the aspect of being able to "get lucky" that you don't find in other games. Its the feeling that you never know whats going to happen next that is going to keep me coming back. All in all, the game environments are stunning and so far I'm entirely happy with the particle effects and character animations. Some people think they are hokey or cheesy...but I think they are good enough. The music is decent, but the sound effects leave a bit to be desired...perhaps they'll update them down the road when they have time to concentrate on polish. The ONLY thing wrong right now is the syncing issue, which is a game breaker in my opinion. In its current state the game is truly unplayable. However, AV seems to know this as they've taken down the servers until they fix the problem. If you ask me, I think they should wipe the server once they fix it, as some people have been able to take advantage of bugged creatures by finding ways to kill them without the mob being able to fight back...allowing them to get better gear than possible and accumulate enough gold to purchase cities. As of last night I know that at least 5 clans had already acquired cities....which I don't think would have been possible without exploiting the sync bug. Anyhow, I give this launch a 4/10 score..... Any other game I've played would have been 1/10 in this situation seeing as it can't even really be played right now....but despite the sync bug (which has caused the servers to be down more often than up...) I still think Darkfall is a great game, which is an amazing feat, so they get 4 points for keeping me interested even though the game is totally broken. I'd LOVE to hear what all of you have experienced since launch, so please post your first impressions in this thread! Darvo |

I basically agree with everything you said. I got to play yesterday around 3 a.m. when the servers first went up. No syncing issues at that time i could see other characters and mobs perfectly fine and fight them perfectly fine. only problem i saw was that goblins were hard to hit in the back when running away, they seemed to fix that in the first post-launch server downing (like 2 hours after they launched initially). Then EVERYONE started logging on... And here came the sync issues. My mobs still seemed to be working fine but they would be running around like crazy fighting invisible players XD. I still managed to get a gank in, and get ganked (losing like 30 gold worth of loot and like 30 minutes of gathering worth of herbs). I then tried to get away from the starter area when i got a quest to kill new mobs. You get quest to kill trolls and kobolds outside the mahirim area after doing your initial acclimation into Darkfall quests. They show you how to fight and guide you through the initial gathering tradeskills, giving you the required items to start gathering stuff right away! (otherwise they cost 20g at npc merchant). items are : sickle for herbs, pickaxe for stone, axe for wood, knife for skinning. I ended up with around 300g when i logged off after about 3-4 hours of play. The latter of my gameplay being wrought by sync issues. Overall i think the game has mucho potential and if/when these server issues get resolved we'll have a great game on our hands! P.S. my favorite part of the game so far is the looting system...it just feels so much more rewarding than any other MMO to date. |
