I love the lack of music, and the eerie backdrop sfx, like hollowing whispers or a void-ish sound, is very mysterious. The last thing I would want is some cheesy BGM music to start playing. |

I agree with strayfe, the whole "less is more" saying. Having just enough sounds to give a dungeon or certain place an eerie feeling and leaving the rest up to imagination... Man these videos really make me wanna play, as I'm sure it does for many of us. ![]() |

more music at least in the cities. no music throughout the world, except at key elements. Edited by 133ker, Jan 31 2009, 03:24 AM.

I'm not an expert to sound design for games. However I am very experienced (without giving out to much details) when it comes to composing and the likes. So it gives me some authority to judge the soundscape of the game. Ambient sounds are interesting and add to the haunted feeling. Footstep sounds are bad. Jump sounds are bad. The overall qaulity (resolution) of the sound is pretty bad. I agree that less = more. But the few sounds we have heard really are out dated. I know from experience that good sound costs a lot of money but.... But thats not a big problem, I think if they did selective eqaulizing on the footsteps they could already reduce the tapshoe experience. Selective sound passes with a variation of 3/4 perhaps would already do the trick. Edited by Pan, Jan 31 2009, 11:53 AM.

Although a bit instense, the footsteps sound is alright. My issue is mainly jumping sounds which are hysterical, and dmg taking sounds. When you take dmg, i.e. jumping from too high, it sounds like you're squeezed between two elephants. |

To be honest I'm glad that there is little sound. It makes me more focused on listening for enemies and in almost every single game that doesn't MAKE me listen, I put my own music on. Music tracks get repetitive and boring, foresty sounds in the forest get annoying so the less there is the better I think (whilst obviously not having the world soundless). Games like CoD4 made me keep the sound on because I had to listen, and the ambience of that game was perfect. Would have sucked if there was a boring music track or "too much enviro/ambience" sound. We shall see how it turns out upon release

The atmospheric track is sometimes too sci-fi like. I'd prefer lighter orchestral tones, which can also be dark. Edited by 133ker, Feb 1 2009, 09:10 PM.

i figure whatever background music they have will eventually get old, and have to be turned off anyway (or replaced with my own music)... my only hope is that they do the sound fx part well, footsteps, jumping, ambient fx (not random ones, but wind, fire, etc)... with directionality and fading with distance. proper sound physics i guess you could say... |

Footstep SFX are done well, just a tad loud but that can be changed. Directional is in, no EAX or reverb type effets are present, sometimes the sounds have a abrupt end as well. But they are working somewhat decently, just a few tweaks needed. No ambiance, which is needed, and even adds to gameplay. |
