I have a 2006 klr650 and was just trying to adjust my balancer chain as per my owners manual and I think I snapped the tensioner bolt! It just spins semi-freely without tightening or loosening in either direction. I dont want to get too down and dirty with this replacement, as I only have a general toolbox (no tq wrenches or special tools). I have read alot about the problems and the aftermarket solutions, but what is the basic parts I will need (hopefully without any special tools). Is it possible that the doohickey or something else broke? How bad would it be to start it up or drive right now? Thanks a Ton!

It sounds to me that you may have either twisted off this bolt or more than likely have stripped out the threads in your engine case. These threads are aluminum and can be pulled out with too much force. To check or to fix this bolt, you will need special tools. If you have no experience with Helicoils, I would recommend taking your bike to a shop or to a Tech Day where someone should be able to help you. I sell Helicoil kits in case you want to try it yourself. In any event you should not start your engine until you get this fixed. Loose parts inside your engine could and probably will do other damage. |
