Balotelli's camp was reportedly incensed by the deeply offensive cartoon, which depicts the Manchester City striker swatting footballs away from Big Ben, mimicking King Kong's pose on top of New York's Empire State Building in the original film.

The cartoon comes on the same day that Russia and Spain's football associations have both been charged by UEFA for "improper conduct of their supporters (racist behaviour, racist chanting)" after their fans made racist chants at the European Championship finals.

The charges stemmed from reports that monkey noises were directed by Spain fans at Balotelli, and that Russian fans targeted Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie. Both players are black.

It is believed that cartoonist Valerio Marini was trying to convey an image of Balotelli dominating England during the quarter‑final in Kiev on Sunday.

But Gazzette have acknowledged their inappropriate role in racism rearing its ugly head again.

"It wasn’t our cartoonist’s best product. In these times we need a bit more moderation, caution and good taste. But we have always fought against racism and condemned booing against Balotelli as unacceptable," said the Milan-based newspaper.

Anti-racism group Kick It Out have questioned Gazzetta's decision making.

"Mario's such an important person in Italian football," a spokesman said.

"Aspiring players in Italy who want to follow in his footsteps could wonder what support they will have when they get to his level when they see cartoons like that. It is not the first time we have seen this sort of depiction of Mario and we think the media have a responsibility. How do they think they can portray him like that?''

Italian journalist Luigi Garlando said: "It is an unfortunate cartoon. It is hard to defend the right of satire against censorship in this case and I would never have allowed it in my newspaper."

I mean its sad that they boo him despite being such a good football player, but you have to admit, balotelli really does look like a gorilla/ape, its so obvious.
