Nowdays I find it very common for people with MENA background to claim that they are fully or part South European (mostly Italian or Spanish). Happens a lot in clubs and other social meetings where you meet random people. I guess it's a way to "impress" the ladies and have a better chance to score. When this happens I usually ask well, can you speak some Italian or Spanish then? Guess what the answer usually is? No. I know people of MENA background isn't exactly the most popular group right now but I find this self-hate so extremely sad. Anyone familiar with this phenomen? Other groups do that as well. They are not proud of what they are obviously. It is sad when you think about it as if to be Spanish or Italian such a great thing(no offense). If you are Spanish or Italian than good for you. I'm just saying that whatever you are ethnically/racially you should be proud of.

From my experience where I live it has been more common that people of MENA descent have claimed this. Maybe because a person from some MENA country can "get away" and "pass" as a Southern European and many might believe him (yeah it's always men) whereas a man from a for example SSA country obviously can't lie about being European. There was even a movie made here about an Iranian guy who liked a girl and in order to catch her interest he pretended to be Italian. The movie was called "Ciao Bella!" or something like that. Yeah, I've seen that movie, lol. The thing is, if a guy says he's Italian, he often becomes "more attractive" for many girls (I'm talking about stereotypes). It hasn't got anything to do with not being proud of your heritage. I don't think it's self-hate either. Edited by ioana, Jan 21 2012, 12:10 AM.

Yes sadly it is so because being Southern European is considered higher status than being from a MENA country. I guess it's their way to get a shag for the night. I do think it's self-hate. They are accepting that their people are lower status and I wonder what their parents and relatives would feel like if they knew their son is lying about his heritage to girls. It's also very embarassing for them when people question their claims and they can't even speak Italian or Spanish. Personally for me when I notice the guy is lying his attractiveness decreases drastically because I can tell this guy isn't confident in his own skin. |

I suppose it has something to do with Italians being the original Latin lovers. Personally my heart skips a beat for English guys. I love their accent! I think its because so many of my favorite authors are Brits and I watch so many BBC period dramas.

I agree with this, and I think it's like that with Spaniards too. I remember that I thought Enrique Iglesias was fully Spanish when I was younger, hahaah.. |

Well I know one thing: I am proud of being a Middle Easterner and have never tried to put on a southern European jacket anywhere. If some MENAs do hide their real identities and pose as Europeans (not that Ive been witness to by the way) then its wrong. But we live at a time where everyone's attention is on the Middle East. And the average westerner/European wont tell you too many positive things about our region. Its been like this since way back, even before the 9/11 attacks. |

I think it has something to do with the 'Mideast = Terrorist' logic that some people use. It makes them feel accepted. Edited by The Ice King, Jan 21 2012, 04:32 AM.

Cypriots seem to want to be closer to Greeks but Greeks see them as Middle Easteners and rightfully so.

I think they only lie about their heritage when they try to pick up women. In other situations i'm guessing they go by their true identities. But this is very common here and i've talked about it with my friends and we were all like woah, there are so many Southern Europeans here suddenly. Where did they come from? (although must be noted lots of Italians relocated here in the 60's or 70's but today they don't move here that much).Yeah the MENA region and people haven't got the best reputation and there are lots of prejudices against them but I still think that faking another "better" ethnicity isn't going to help anything. It only does more harm imo. And it's good that you are proud of your heritage! I hate nationalism but I still feel like everyone should be proud of one's heritage. Why rightfully so? It is pretty obvious that Cypriots are closest to Greeks. Edited by Liza, Jan 21 2012, 05:31 AM.

Its not really there own fault, i can definitely see why they do that. If they are young and dealing with young girls, then stereotypes about ethnicities could be a factor for a lot of girls. I think they realize this and just want to have a higher chance of scoring, i dont think it is selfhate. i know lots of young women who would turn down a guy if she knew he was muslim regardless of his personality and looks etc. edit* saw your other post now, and i have to disagree, i dont think they accept the lower status of their background, or at least they dont agree with it, but they realize that a lot of the time you cant change peoples mind about something so they play along because they know it will give them an advantage. i actually do the same thing, i look latino but i am south asian, but i am adopted though so i always say i am latino cause i know south asians have bad reputation amongst women. and it has worked out really good when it comes to women here in my neighborhood. What if you start to like a girl? Are you going to reveal your real ethnicity then? |

Some Middle Easterners might say this, but most are proud of our origins. I could care less about the Spanish or Italians. I am proud of my origins and bloodline that from the paternal line originates in the Caucasus and the maternal line from Arabia. I have great bloodline and would not change it, if even if my life depended on it. I would say IAM MIDDLE EASTERN AND PROUD OF MY ARABIAN BLOOD, YOU DON'T LIKE IT GET A HIKE. |

We do resemble our Middle Eastern neighbors like Lebanese, Israelis and Assyrians, and sometimes Iranians, but so do some Greeks and Southern Italians. If I give you a picture with Greeks and Greek Cypriots, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be sure when you will guess who is who. What about Anatolian Greeks? When I put an Anatolian Greek in a guessing thread, he is guessed as Lebanese, Turkish, Iranian, Armenian or Cypriot. The thing is that they don't live in Anatolia anymore, but in mainland Greece. Rhodeans and Cretans are also very similar to us. Look at this picture. 6 guys. 2 are Greeks, and 4 are Greek Cypriots. Can you tell me who is who? ![]() (except one guy who looks 100% Cypriot) |
