I think I could fit into most Northern, Western and Eastern European countries and everywhere, where those countries have colonies. Atleast in those countries, where I have been, people never tried to speak English with me or thought I was a tourist (except East Asia). Well, I've always been with native people, too.
If you take anything in this forum overly serious, you should really go and see a doctor.

anywhere in southern europe (including france)
"And you want to know what is the true and causal nature of the issue? it is simply that we have been tricked into accepting the foundations of our own slavery and we have ourselves built upon it our own prison; and nowadays we defend this self-inflicted yoke from anyone who tries to remove it from us and save us from our own folly."

LOL at this thread. According to topos, probably only Latin America. According to Funk, non-Anatolian Turks.

Are central and northern Europeans hesitant to ask if a Mediterranean-looking person comes from the Middle East or North Africa? Like they fear they would be insulting that person to assume he or she could come from a non-European country?

Just asking.

That's not a very serious problem, Caudium, because people from Italy usually are not called Rashid, Muhammed, Abdul etc. so way should anybody ever ask something like that?

Apart from that you can usually tell where someone is from.

Also, if you see a stranger on the street, do you go to him and say something like: "Hey, you look like you could be from the middle east!"? Perhaps in the past, hardly today.

I would definitely feel embarrassed, if I told an Italian that he looks like an Arab, but neither have I ever done so nor do I think that I'm ever going to do so.

And I must repeat that they do not on average look that similar.

I mean, this is the stereotypical Arab:

Not every Arab looks like that, but it's the general direction. There are not many Italians who look particularly similar, or are there?

Well, when I say "Middle East", I am including the Near East (Levant and Anatolia as well).

I'm saying this because I've met Germans and Swiss people (both these countries have established Turkish immigrant communities; so I'm assuming that they could have had some familiarity with their looks) and they all said that I looked like I come from "Southern Europe" (ancestry wise).

Oh, and they hadn't known my name yet, at that point. We were introduced through a mutual friend and were at a dinner at that time.

Hmm, I once met a girl from Calabria in the community kitchen of the dormitory I was staying then and even though she was quite dark, I knew that she was either from Southern Italy or Greece.

I remember also a guy from Jordan, a christian, who looked European, Greek more precisely, though he was rather tall.

So, yes, there are some people from the Levant who look Southern European. But I have never seen a Turk in person where it wasn't clear that it was a Turk.

Mostly southeastern Europe (Italy, Greece, Balkans), and the northern Near East (Armenia, Georgia, western Turkey, and probably Lebanon as well). Spain and the south of France would also work.

And how many Arabs really look like that? It's an extreme type found among Arabs, but it is not the majority type by far. What people not in these circles might compare such types to are extreme, dark Dinarics, verging on Armenoid, who could look similar, if you don't know the mechanics of it all. Such types are not rare in parts of Italy.

@Funk. He might be an extreme case, but the Arabian Arabs I personally met went in that direction and I didn't think for a second that they could be anything else.
