Single Parenthood a Common Destiny for Somali Women

published 2009-11-18 05:37 PM, updated 2009-11-18 07:51 PM

Immigrants are more likely to be single parents than mainstream Finns. Somalis in particular have a significantly higher rate of being a lone parent.

Some 46 percent of women with Somali backgrounds living in Finland are single parents, according to Statistics Finland. Just 18 percent of mainstream Finnish women are single parents. For women from Iraq and Iran, the number was around 20 percent last year.

Unemployment among males and difficulties integrating into Finnish society are two significant problems leading to single parenthood, according to Batulo Essak, a couples' therapist who is also Somali.

Living conditions are often crowded and families are large. A tiny argument can easily explode into a full-fledged fight.

"It is easier to divorce than to try to save the marriage. There are no relatives nearby and no support," says Essak.

Married, yet single

Some 40 percent of Somalis who are single parents are still married. The exact causes for this are unknown. However, polygamy is considered to be one reason why Somali women are raising children alone but are still legally married.

In Somalia, men are allowed four wives in accordance with Islamic law. In Finland, polygamy is technically not permitted. But it is possible -- if just one of the unions is officially registered.

Imam Khodr Chehab of the Islamic Society of Finland says that polygamy is certainly happening in Finland. However, the number of people living in polygamist unions is difficult to estimate. That's because an imam is not needed to get married in Islam. In fact, the couple only needs two witnesses.

Imam Chehab says that men in Finland do ask about the possibility of marrying multiple wives. However, he adds that he always urges them to be cautious in such endeavours.

When asked if he would perform a marriage ceremony for a man taking several wives, Khodr did not answer the question directly.

"These are difficult matters, especially if I know that the man has problems with his wife but does not want to divorce her," he said.

Effects of polygamy questioned

YLE also interviewed several Muslim women in Finland about polygamy. None of them were keen on the idea.

The problems plaguing Somali couples in Finland are well known. For example, discussion groups have been established to try to help couples work out their differences.

Tuomas Martikainen, a religious studies researcher, says that single parenthood among foreign women has been apparent in Finnish research for a decade. He says he hopes more attention will be given to the issue.

Martikainen says that additional information should be gathered on how polygamy affects families and children. Questions of legality also need to be resolved.

Yes unfortunately this is an example of what liberalization leads to...I wonder what Apollodorus would think of such liberal "open mindedness" as to let immigrants leech off the taxes of hard workers.

They aren't single mothers. I'm ashamed to say that many Somali families will lie about the mom being a single mother in order to get welfare even though the father is in the picture. They do the same thing here in the U.S. They'll even get the government to give them money to pay a nanny when that nanny is the grandmother of the kids, so you're paying the grandma for something she would do anyways. So, I'd estimate that the actual figure of single mothers among the Somali community in Finland is way lower than 46%.

No they aren't single mothers. They are in polygamist marriages but will use the govt because one man can't support all those women and kids and in Finland and other Scandinavian countries most immigrants dont know the language. They just want the public assistance. I know it happens here too. Kurdish socialists on this board like to claim that people want to work just for the good of working so if their country becomes socialist things like this wont be a problem. Oh really? :shakehead: Those Kurds would probably just tell the lazy asses to move to Finland and kick them out of the country or let them die in poverty.

Speaking as a Somali, I would say that polygamy is very rare in the Somali community. Very few Somali men are married to multiple women. That practice isn't as common amongst Somalis as it is amongst Arabs. Like I said, it's most likely the case that those women have a husband but they're pretending to be single mothers to get welfare. Their husband might work or might not work but he won't legally claim her as his wife or else they'll take the benefits away. So, they're married but not legally married.

Its interesting to hear that because Somalia is on the periphery of the Islamic world and near Ethiopia, where the social structure of the Amhara resembles that of pre-industrial Europe rather than the Islamic world or Africa.
