OK as some may know of the current shonen popular trio one piece/bleach/naruto

but I grew up watching the shonen movie titled AKIRA and it was also based on a shonen manga of the same title,so I was wondering where did the shonene timelessness of akira go with these new crop of shonen manga what exactly would make these stick up to the caliber of akira manga since akira was the first manga brought overiand colorized by marvel comics, which brought over fans of traditional american comics to the manga universe.

edit a few links on the manga I'm talking about

I'm not sure about the manga, but I wouldn't put Akira in the shounen genre. The wikipedia link you provided puts it into seinen too.

I guess it could work.

Anyway, as for your question, I suppose new shounen anime is much tamer/kids oriented than "older" ones.. like Akira (if you put it into shounen genre) and Fist of the North Star. I don't mind either way, but I think newer/younger anime fans will generally prefer the new shounen stuff.

but the newer stuff doesnt seem to handle actual issues that people face as they grow up unlike in akira which to some aspects shown the revolts of the youth from the 60s-90s america & japan in some cases,use of religion as both saviour & abuses in power from same authorities.

well I guess the newer chapters of naruto is sorta touching some akira type stuff but it doesnt feel as natural as the actual riots/destruction in the akira manga were.

True enough, the new stuff seems a bit shallow in comparison.

arent there any more shonen that actually has depth anymore or is it all just imagery without storytelling majority of the time now?

I don't know if I'd classify Akira as shounen either, but for arguments sake if it were, I would say that just like any anime genre there are series for younger audiences and older audiences. Even when Akira was originally released, there were plenty of kiddie shounen floating around. it's not that shonen has gotten more kiddie, but shonen has it's sub-genres that can't really be compared on the same level.

but you have to admit you need some shonen that should be a bit smarter than a majority of titles to at least grow the genre into different directions without crossing the seinen barrier.

Shonen is defintely going through the same magic girl phase like when sailor moon came out and all of the sudden the already narrowly-varied shojo genre went completely cookie cutter for a few years. I'm sure like everthing it's time will pass and they'll start mixing it up a bit.

I wouldn't put akira in the shounen category.
Shounen is mindless action, and always has been. I don't see much - if any - change.

I think Akira is getting an anime tv series this, next, or the year after though, so we'll probably see.

actually dicaprio is making akira in 2 live action movies supposedly.

Dont forget fist of the north star has a story and ended in 27 volumes and shown in a shonen magazine. ^.^;
