Divine wrath shalt smite the sinner who bears the seal

I decided to start making it a practice of formally talking about the anime I watch at current. In all honesty outside of school work I'm bored. I've got drawing talent but I don't always want to spend my free time drawing. Any way, I've decided to pick Kampfer for my first sort of episode-episode review because I've not only watched the first few episodes but I've also had a peak at the manga. Now the anime's 4 episodes in so I'll work on my summary by episode and try to catch with the pace of the anime. I'll be adding content to this over the next coupla hours so be patient... SPOILER WARNING!!! EPISODE ONE -- Destiny The Chosen ones Summary & Review The episode opens with the two main protagonists engaged in a one-sided battle with a beautiful blue-haired girl trying to escape her foe as she is mercilessly hunted. The chase continues through the woods and into the city until they reach the roof top. The former falls as she is shot at, and the Opening song begins. --------------------------------------------------- So, following somewhat of a strange opening the episode begins with a figure explaining that the protagonist, whome from no on will be referred by her name Natsuru Senō, has been selected by the "moderators" to fight as a "Kampfer." It's almost immediately revealed that something's not quite right with her since she seems awfully surprised that she's a female, and with good reason of course; she's actually a guy. :| After "she" tries to come to grips with what actually happened the voice from earlier interjects, explaining the reason for Seno's awkward predicament. Basically that all Kamfer's are female, and hence since Natsuru is a male he changes into a female whenever his powers are activated as a Kampfer. The voice further explains that since he's become a kampfer, he must fight with other Kampfers. While we hear this voice explaining the basics Natsuru's still trying to figure out where the voice is coming from, and it turns out that a doll he has is alive and serving as a messenger from the "moderators" that control the selection of Kampfer. The doll explains that Natsuru has a bracelet that signifies an oath to the Kampfer, and informs him that it'll shine before he transforms. Meanwhile Natsuru starts to get angry with it, soon grabbing him and throwing him at the speakers! Natsuru back down and lays on his bed hoping that everything he's experiencing is all a dream, and the doll jumps on the bed to help forcibly revert him back to a male by drop kicking him in the stomach :| Posted Image So with that Natsuru wakes up in the morning and to his relief he seems to have gone back to normal. Soon enough he leaves so he can get to class. On the way he runs into a girl from his school named Sakura. They both decide to stay together to wait for the next bus to their school. They both engage in some casual conversation and it's clear from the onset that Natsuru likes her, and we also find out from her that the doll is actually a gift she gave from the Entrails Animal series (morbid if you ask me :| ). Kaede then notices the bracelet that Natsuru is wwaring on his wrist and just as he looks down at it it begins to shine, signaling that he's about to transform into a female again. XD Natsuru's left in a difficult position because he really doesn;t want Kaede to know about his transformation into a girl, so he tries to move to a different area, and he's stuck trying to persuade her to let him go forward without her. During the exchange somebody shoot at them, narrowly missing. It turns out the shooter is the red head from the beginning of the episode. She begins to chase him but before she could get to him on the spot Ntsuru disappears behind a passing vehicle as his transformation takes effect. And he realizes that everything that happened both the night before and that morning were no dream. Posted Image Natsuru still doesn't understand why he has to fight while the mysterious girl explains that they must fight because they're Kampfers (Oooookay), before shooting at him again. Natsuru flees trying to dodge bullets. She asks for Natsuru's name and then reveals hers as Mishima Akane. Just as Akane is about to finish Natsuru off Sakura appears searching for Natsuru, catching Akane's attention and immediately provoking her to aim at Sakura. Natsuru seeing this jumps to intervene, and in the process shooting a fireball at Akane to stop her. She dodges the attack. Meanwhile Natsuru steps in front of Sakura to guard her while Akane comments on him being a Zauber type Kampfer. Akane is about to shoot at the two again when the light pole behind her begins to buckle. Natsuru reflexively lunges to save her from being crushed. Akane ends up on the top... and I think this image summarizes things succinctly: Posted Image After a brief exchange trying to get Akane off him, she abruptly leaves, with Sakura running up him to ask if "she" is alright. Natsuru at this point isn't to interested in sticking around, and promptly leaves. The episode continues the next day at school. Higashida, one of Natsuru's friend comes up to inform him that someone's calling him. Outside of the classroom is a timid girl -- the school librarian, who's come to the boy's side of the school to see Narsuru. Upon asking for her name she reveals she's none other than Akane, the bombastic character that was chasing Natsuru in battle. :O They head to the library all the while Natsuru is taken aback by the stark contrast in Akane's personality between her normal and Kampfer form. Akane explains that the reason she left the day before was because the color of their bracelets were the same; in effect those with blue bracelets are allies, and those wearing red bracelets are enemies. Posted Image Akane also explains that she's been a Kampfer for six months, and that her advisor is another one of those dolls from the entrails animal series. We basically learn about the three different types of weapons that Kampfers posses; a schwert, Zauber, and a hand gun, as well as other fundamentals with the Kampfers. As they try to grab a book from the shelf to look into matter further they accidentally knock down all of the books on the shelf placing themselves in a rather uncomfortable position :P While Natsuru is trying to help her up Akane's thinking up all of these weird sexual innuendos thinking that he's violating her. During the commotion the class president of the girls side intervenes telling them to be quiet in the library. As the class pesident leaves Natsuru's bracelet suddenly begins to shine, due to the presence of a Kampfer nearby (the council president). Although no fight ensues, Natsuru still winds up in his female form since he has no control over the transformation yet, and the two make their way through the girls section of the school to get to the roof. The two begin to wonder about the purpose behind why the Kampfers have to fight, though Akane isn't sure either because the dolls aren't very forthcoming about the details either. Posted Image That evening on their way home, Sakura calls Natsuru, and he in a panic apologizes for leaving her earlier in the morning. She tells him that she has something to talk about, however much to his disappointment it's not about him, or rather not his male form anyway. She asks if he knows anything about the girl who saved her (Natsuru's female form) and if he could introduce her to the girl. Posted Image Natsuru, is left with another mess, because he wants Sakura to like him as a guy, not as the girl, and he's stuck trying to figure out how the get out of the mess with no results forthcoming. It seems at the same time he and Akane are becoming better acquainted, though the happy moment is abruptly interrupted when she transforms and point her gun at him... Just afterwards they're both attacked and a sword slices through bookshelf. When Natsuru gets up he's already transformed into his female form. Akane send Natsuru out as bait to lure the attacks from their unknown assailant but, both end up getting attacked. As Akane dodges another one that slices through the bookshelf behind her, it turns out Sakura got caught in the middle of the fight. Akane, thinking she's behind the attacks proceeds to attack her, and the episode ends there. |

Actually it reminded me more of Mai Hime, except not as good. I've dropped it for the time being. |

Yeah not much has happened with the series at this point, and I haven't looked up how long they're planning to make it either. I'll summarize the last few episodes when I clear through this week with my design work since I'm being swamped with it, but so far the series is becoming more of a fanservice than it is action. Add to that it's only loosely connected with the story line of the manga. |

Well here's the breath awaited butter spread review of episodes 2-7. It's not going to be as detailed as the first for obvious reasons, but I'll try to explain the gist of the plot so far. The manga from what I can tell is up to volume 3, and the anime is already caught up with it. So don't expect this to be a manga adaptation of the series. While up to now it's loosely followed the manga story wise it's basically it's own story now. Episode 2 continued where the first left off and ultimately things wind down from there. Without really spoiling much there's not much fighting once the altercation between Akane, Natsuru and the class president ends. But by this point in the anime and manga both we're also finding out just what kind of yuuri material is getting into this series XD Episode 3 starts off with Natsuru getting transferred over to the girls side of the school to quell rumors about the beautiful "girl" that's been sighted on campus but not registered in their system. Her presence also strikes a chord with the newspaper club and a group of three that basically exploit Natsuru's popularity with the girls for profit :P And this accounts for about half of the episode. In the end Kaede intervenes but she mostly uses it as an excuse to get closer to the female Natsuru. Episode 4 wound up being a fanservice trap with Natsuru getting caught up in the upcoming school festival. All the while he has to deal with being in a three way female love triangle. MOAR to be posted soon with pics. |
