First things first. Anaconda, you're an imbecile. An absolute nincompoop with putty for brains. You're a great admin even if yo think otherwise, so shut up and freakin' deal with it. Now that that's off my chest, let's talk business. This post is a response to our dear admin's call for input on his new idea to redesign the forum. I say it most likely wont work. The changes aren't bad, but they: 1. Will destroy the comfortable feel of AC, which is quite sufficient 2. Won't attract new members Here's my REAL input. We're going about this the wrong way. To get more members and more posts, AC needs to increase it's presence on the internet. Anaconda, I'm going to ask you to tell us how you're funding AC, if at all there is any funding needed. Let's treat AC as a company for this exercise. A new company headed by a bunch of creative young entrepreneurs. Funds are low. So how should they go about advertising? Some of my suggestions are: 1. See if any shops or other establishments like internet cafes are averse to letting us put up flyers on a wall or two. They don't even have to be printed. Markers and paper is all we will need. 2. Banners and buttons on social websites. Many sites let you put in your own html code to design your profile, so if our current AC members are willing to host such banners/buttons/ads on their pages, it WILL help. 3. You know how hotmail (and maybe yahoo? I can't remember) inserts text ads at the bottom of emails? We could do the same. Simple text additions to member' email signatures will spread the word. What we also need is funding. I've thought this through, and I've decided we should go all out. AC's half dead, anyway, so we might as well give it everything we've got. The funding will take care of itself, should our publicity efforts succeed. Ads on AC are one way. Even so, funding is only a priority if we decide to make AC self-sufficient with it's own servers like 4chan is. If it comes to that, I need to ask you, Anaconda, whether it's possible to clone AC exactly as it is. I want us to go about this in a professional manner, especially, if we resort to flyers. We'll need to clean up AC's image, and possibly impose an age restriction of 16 years. Existing members will be exempt, naturally. Many people will object to this proposal of mine, and understandably so. But it's only a suggestion. It's time for ACers to show some love and time for some brainstorming. Let the 'Make AC Big' drive begin here. Everybody, please contribute your suggestions and ideas. I don't want to see AC die a second time. Btw, Ana, do we have a Google listing? I'm not funding AC monetarily, I'm not employed so I have zero income and the only feasible option I had when remaking the forum was to use a free host. There's a significant benefit to having our own server, but the other side of the coin is that this one will never 'expire' because I failed to make a payment. Either way, unless I get my own funds or we get support from someone who's willing to put in the tab there's not much I can do at the moment as it concerns using a paid service. To top that off, we would have to migrate to a different forum system to do that, and since zetaboards owns and manages all of the servers on this one I don't have access to the data stored in it and it would end up with making an entirely new forum with everyone having to re register their accounts. I don't think reregistering is quite what people wanna have to do a repeat performance of Long story short, at the moment running on our own server and cloning the content on this forum isn't really possible. The former may be in the future, but the latter isn't feasible at all. GG and Nevyn were forking several hundred dollars a month in server bills, and at least one other forum I've kept tabs one runs over 300 a month. The stuff there would have to be funded by ads on the main page and I'd need to look at how much those would help before doing anything.
I'm pretty open to most suggestions as long as they don't violate the TOS of those places... I've been doing since the old forum, and I know several members help out with this to varying degrees.
The default age limit is 13 years of age in compliance with the COPPA. So I don't an age limit needs to be placed on the forum registration. Especially since we're talking only a 3 year gap between the COPPA laws and your suggestion. I understand why you're making the suggestion, but I think federal regulations already establish it.
If by listing you mean registration for bot traffic so we appear on search engines, then yes. Several oldies who've returned found the forum through the google searches. Overall the ideas aren't that bad, I saw the response in the thread I made and I know that it destroys a lot of the old layout, I'd personally like to change it, but I'm not gonna require a complete remake of the layout. In fact beyond removing inactive anime sections I'm antsy about screwing around too much with the layout because there seems to be a bug with a couple of sections where when I remove member & guest read access it does it for the entire forum category. It seems to be a bug in ZB. |

Well, I feel ACers should do their bit too. If people post ideas here, and maybe even implement some of them, we could probably get more members. Personally, I have no problems with ads on AC, except that people have to click the links for money to come in, and even then it isnt much. I wonder how Moot pays for 4chan.... |

the real reason AC was so big before is because we were linked with other popular sites. We could always go back to that. They were just main sites for the anime we talk about. |

I'm in the process of finding sites to do link exchanges with now. I had a requirement to meet at a site before I could start looking into it. I have at least one other that I may look into but I need to find out what requirements they have before doing so as well. |

What's been going on with the original AC site? I mean - are they still hosting links there? The list is right there for the anime series we had. just follow the links back and you'll see the broken link that used to lead back to AC forums. Edited by Merryl, Oct 30 2009, 07:22 PM.

http://www.animechains.com/linkdirectory.cfm It looks like they still do... I thought I read on there somewhere that they required you to have high traffic to qualify for a link add-on but I may have been wrong about that or was looking at something else on the site. well that's not exactly what I meant... see most of their links are dead. I don't think anyone really takes care of it. I would could steal some of our links back before they make any plans to do anything with their domain name. We could split up. each of us take a section of the alphabet and report any actual live links to places that still exist. -edit- nice ... jesus they're deader than we are might as well forget the A's I'm already past angelic layer and there's nothing Edited by Merryl, Oct 30 2009, 07:43 PM.

Yeah... I saw your edit... I can't add to that one unless I can get in contact with the webmaster. I tried emailing her in April, and snow tried emailing her like a week ago neither one of us got a response. I'm not totally sure what to do with the links though... I can host them on the portal page I guess. ETA: ooohhhh.... I was about to say also that the updates to some of the sister sites were glacial... Edited by Anaconda, Oct 30 2009, 07:45 PM.

really? what's the big deal? it's just a link and it may bring them more traffic as well. ok well for one ... Saiyuki.com is holding our dead link. So there maybe one you can get back, since AC was the fan forum for the anime. the only interesting link under Ayashi no Ceres http://theblackmoon.com/index.html everything else under the A's are just info hub directory or broken links I should be doing mom stuff and gutting some pumpkins before work. So just update this thread if anyone else wants to help search the links from the mother ship. lmao Edited by Merryl, Oct 30 2009, 08:12 PM.

I guess I'll check around at the two live ones and ask around then... As for our contact with the web master I don't know honestly... they said on the ac.net domain that they were redoing the forums but it's been up for about 9 months already... and it's said the same thing... There seems to be no inclination to just use a free hosting forum or something. Also when you have the chance tell me where you left off and I'll look through it in a bit Edited by Anaconda, Oct 30 2009, 08:14 PM.

I'm working on the commercialization of AC. Personally I like the changes to AC. The layout will attract members. It's much more simplified. Though I wish you'd have added an other section Anaconda. I'm trying to piece together a web banner for neoAC that we can use. I'll post more about it later. |

Another section? Sorry but do you think you can clarify? All I've done as of yet is adjust the visibility of the anime series sections. I'm planning to apply the remaining changes to that area this weekend. I haven't done much of anything to the main sections yet. One thing however... when I finish with the main community section some rules regarding profanity and all can be relaxed a bit |

The perv section's been private ever since I put it up so no change... Most of non-anime is already private as well... except for the main part where this thread is. I'm gonna reshuffle the subforums in here so that they're readily accessible from the main index... I know it kinda destroys the traditional layout of AC, but at least you won't have to load extra pages to get to another section. Since the community section excluding anime will be private I'll be able to relax some of the restrictions :) |

Changes will be applied late tomorrow night hopefully while the forum is at it's lowest peak of activity and when I can do it without completely making the section go batcrap haywire while people are navigating through everything. Just be aware that if you plan on being online at around midnight eastern standard time (US east coast) that's around the time I plan on starting on this stuff. :| |

The only part you should avoid while I apply the changes is the series specific discussion areas as I'll be moving threads to general anime and setting unused series invisible. I don't care if you're posting elsewhere though I'm trying to do this late at night so you don't have to deal with everything shifting while you're trying to reply to a thread :P Edited by Anaconda, Nov 7 2009, 10:38 PM.

I'm going to post this here before I post a seperate thread about it. If you would like to design a banner for neoAC than please PM or email it to me. Please include information about the image. i.e. Say you have a neoAC banner that has naruto in the background, well, than in the email you should list the character names, the direct link to the original images, the anime title, and author information (your name, email/website). Thanks to all who may participate, this is strictly voluntary and there is no prize, so don't ask! XP |

Changes to the anime series specific sections are complete. I've added the anime titles to all the threads so if you know the title you can do a keywork search with the browser. No threads were deleted and all can be located in the general anime section. I'm going to tinker with the other anime and manga sections tonight. The hope behind reorganizing them of course is to make navigation easier and improve thread previewing. I'm gonna try to bring most of the manga and anime sections up front to the board index. And lastly the remaining section of the non-anime areas will be set to members only. I'll make the changes to non-anime by next weekend. Hopefully by doing this in stages it'll help us ease into the layout changes a bit. |
