Naruto Shippuden is coming to American TV...; But not on Cartoon Network...

It's just been confirmed today that Disney XD has claimed broadcast rights to the Naruto Shippuden series starting in October. Some see this as a desperate move by the channel to appeal to the tween boys demographic that they made their channel for in the first place. Also bare in mind that Jetix, Toon Disney's original action cartoon block, was notorious for its heavy edits of the first Naruto series when it aired in Europe. Feel free to offer your thoughts on these surprising developments.

I wonder how they'll handle the Hidan fights though.. self impalement and dismemberment isn't very Disney-like :P

But that may also depend on when they plan on airing it the first time.

My son has all of the first series box sets and wants to get Shippuden, but I would rather buy the box sets instead of single disks.

Anaconda Oct 2 2009, 06:03 PM I still can't see where disney and anime quite mix together... Disney created it's XD channel specifically to appeal to the "tween" boys demographic. Unfortunately, the channel hasn't been racking up on this viewership as Disney liked as more girls have been seeing the channel because of both XD and regular Disney Channel's original shows being on there, which feature both cute boys and comedy which draw in the female audiences. Shippuden's likely a gamble that XD is taking to try drawing in the tween boy demographic that they want. In return for this gamble, Viz gets the opportunity to promote Shippuden's North American release on a new channel since Cartoon Network seems to have no interest in airing the show.

Slan Oct 3 2009, 09:50 PM surprisingly no one dies in shippuden & apparently naruto's comments comparing sakura to tsunade were taken out ;_; on XD Other edits: -Most mentions of the words "die" and "kill" are changed to "destroy." -More cloud cover during Konohamaru and Naruto's Sexy Jutsu. -Konohamaru's Sexy Jutsu is changed to Cutie Jutsu and Naruto's Sexier Jutsu is changed to Hottie Jutsu. -All blood is digitally removed. -Scenes of Kisame and Sasuke using their swords are cut out. -Close-up shots of Deidara's bombs exploding on the Sand Village guards are cut out. And yes as Slan pointed out, scenes where there are corpses of ninjas on the ground have groaning voice clips added to give off the impression that they are still alive.

Disney is trying to make the show more "kid friendly" and bring in a larger "younger" audience and it just might work sadly. My 7 year old did not like the original series but when we watched Shippuden on Disney he loved it, he even went out and bought a couple of Naruto games for his DS with his allowance this weekend. My 10 year old did notice the whole defeat versus kill edit, but still seemed to like it well enough. I will still get him the uncut box sets when they come out however. I have not seen the uncut episodes yet but I will watch them with my sons when they do come out and I am sure they will be much better than the Disney versions.

Also... animedad... I believe Viz has release episodes 1-8 on DVD. IIRC they're releasing 4 episodes per month on theire schedule, similar to their releases of Bleach.

I was afraid that they had gotten too many complaints and had already dropped it, but I see that that is not the case.

I figure Disney had to have a few complaints after that and thought that they would cave in and drop it. I still think that they will drop it eventualy because even with the heavy editing they are doing it will still get too many parents upset.

I did not complain, but I am a little more liberal than alot of parents, I have let my kids watch the unedited original Naruto since they were 3 and 6. I got them the unedited Yu-Gi-Oh for Christmas this year since I hate what 4kids did to it. Plus since it is in Japanese with subtitles I figure it will help them learn as well.
