I was just wondering if anyone else has done this. My hd came in two partitions that were not in the sizes I wanted. Splitting off the extra from drive D: wasn't a problem ... but now I have to figure out how to add the new "free space" partition back into drive C: I bought vista this time around and the expand option is not active from the manager control panel. it does give me an option to drop it into a folder? residing in drive C: The hell? right. |

You want to merge your partitions, right? First, move all your data from the partition you want to merge the data from, into the partition you want to merge into. (Move D: items into C:) Right click "Computer", select "Manage", go to the storage>Disk Management option in the right pane, select the partition you want to remove, right click it, and select "Delete Volume" tell the dialogue box it's okay to delete whatever remains on that partition, then it will finish in 1 or 2 seconds. Next, right click the other partition and select "Extend Volume", click next and towards the bottom of the next screen you will see "select the amount to expand" or similar wording, just click the up arrow on the screen until the numbers stop rising, and then click next. click Finish, and it's done. With windows storage manager, you need to have available free space next to the partition you want to extend. So in your case when you shrank the second volume, you'd make sure the second partition ended at the last possible bit, and the free space would be put before that partition. That would mean the first partition would have that free space to extend into, if the free space is at the end of the drive, it's useless to the first partition. Partition Magic is a great 3rd party partition manager if you're interested in looking into buying it. Edited by Nollog, May 9 2009, 02:03 PM.

oh ... so I actually have to do this twice -- since I didn't do it right in the first place. I have to make the new volume be the partition I want left so that the small one is next to C:\ well that stinks but it can't be any worse than the trouble I had locking D:\ in the first place. |
