While on the surface Anime seems to the outsider to be a lot of school girl outfits and funny collectable monsters, but we know better. Some even compare it to american primetime due to popularity and content, and while this is true, I'd like to think it's a step above. Anime touches on frequetn subjects that American adult programmign need special channels and discretion warnings for. Gay couples, transgenders, bisexuals, actual violence, death, perversion, and such are fair game in anime. In america many of these things are cutting edge just to be featured but in anime it goes one step further where they're no longer features, but common place and comon theme. Maybe it's jsut me, and I know it probably has more to do with the audience..but are these "cartoons" we enjoy a few steps ahead of North Americas most prominent, primetime, mature programs? |

Japan is more open to all those factors than the majority of America and Europe. |

you forget american cartoons are mostly by those who grew up on disney animated works/hanna barbera/looney toons/ so its considered all about children's entertainement, there are a few exceptions fritz the cat & heavy metal mag/movies/[as] comedy from indy comics artists that are for adult viewing. |

that's a valid point, maybe as more of our generation grows up with anime influences, the future cartoonists will be abel to create mature animated series that can evolve beyond the pop-culture, slapstick of american dad, the simpsons, or futurama...so far the Americas most popular attempts at mature animation. |
