I was curious about how you all started to watch anime.

as for me, it was kind of accidental:
On another forum someone posted something about 'the most parodied opening sequence ever' along with a few parodies, one of those was about Haruhi Suzumiya, and because I accidentaly clicked the youtube button on the vid, I also got a list of related videos. One of those vids was episode 7 of Harubi Suzumiya, and I liked it a lot, so I decided to watch the whole show.

That's my story :P

Started with the classics back in '95 with Sailor Moon and got into DBZ a year later. And as far as I can remember those were the only two I got huge amounts of exposure to. Then 2005 came and we got hit by Hurricane Katrina and had no cable. That probably marks the time when I REALLY started watching anime with a habit

I've been watching anime all the time as a kid without really knowing it. Then back in '03 i randomly caught some Inu Yasha on TV, and a friend of mine happened to have every episode released at that time (fansubbed) and he got me into it. Then I started to watch other shows, etc.

seems to be something similar for me; I watched dbz, dragonball, pokemon, yu-gi-oh, & even g gundam on CN & other channels without really knowing they were anime. Then I stumbled upon adult swim in the summer of 02, with shows like trigun, flcl, big O, bebop & especially inuyasha getting me into anime. I mostly watched whatever anime was on AS until I watched death note subbed in early 07, & I figured out I liked subbed better. :D

I started watching anime when I didn't even know what it is or had never even heard the term anime in 1984 when I was 14 years old when Voltron was originally on when I was a teenager, I was way obsessed with it back then still am Voltron obsessed today more so with Golion though. Then summer of 95 with Ronin Warriors on a local station, and that fall I was comparing all the cartoons to it even Sailor Moon, and Teknoman. I become obsessed with Ronin Warriors, and missed it dearly once it wasn't on TV, and was glad when I found Teknoman, and once I finally fell in love with Sailor Moon. I had no idea until I came online in 97, and was searching on information, and stuff for Sailor Moon I didn't know what anime was, all I knew was that it wasn't american. Eventually I started my anime video collection, and I found my first anime video Oh My Goddess Episode 1, and when I got it, and watched it that, and Sailor Moon together is how I got started along with the first Tenchi movie on the scif fi channel when they still showed anime movies.

Hmm, I'd have to say that the first Anime I really ever watched as a kid was Sonic the Hedgehog...even the original series was Japanese influenced...after that, a local station played Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z at like 6 in the morning so I was always catching it...watched Digimon on Fox kids until it was destroyed(season 3) Got cable...watched Pokemon, Cardcaptors, Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Outlaw Star(my fave anime to this day!) Did not discover AS until I was 13, my parents had previously banned me from it...but watched InuYasha, Big O, Witch Hunter Robin...as the years progressed, I kinda dummed out of anime, but now have managed to keep up with a few...Bleach specifically...

My parents wouldn't let me watch Adult Swim because it was the 14 and up show...but hell, I still loved catching Futurama on there, and then my animes not long after.

I rented some weird anime at Blockbuster a looooong time ago on VHS. Stuff like Otaku no Video (which was completely unnecessary to watch as a newcomer considering all the anime references), Crying Freeman, Cutey Honey, Devil Hunter Yohko -- stuff like that.

Then I started watching Sailor Moon in 1995 or so, when it was starting to get really popular. I was probably 12 or so... and now I'm 25...

I first started watching anime when I was little, and didn't really know what anime was. I just saw them as cartoons with the rest of the early morning cartoons.

First anime series I watched alot was probably like Sailor Moon.

Haunted by Failure

I always watched Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Digimon whenever they were on. (mornings, after school, whatever). And one night I decided to stay up and watch some cable at my grandma's house. Well their was like nothing on so I turned it to cartoon network cause I thought maybe there would be some cartoons on. But I ended up watching an episode of InuYasha. (It was one with Kouga in it <3 XD) And I eventually got hooked. I found the InuYasha manga the next day at the library so I got hooked to anime and manga around the same time. After that day I started looking into different anime like FullMetal Alchemist and Scryed that were on Adult Swim. Again after that I realized that Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Digimon were anime the whole time, so I knew me and anime would be friends for a long time. And so here I am a obsessive Anime fan, whose in love with Kouga from InuYasha. XD

well *sweatdrop* funny story ... I was actually around for the first anime invasion. Back in '85 when they first starting showing actual anime and not americanized cartoons.
I lived on the WI IA border so at 6:00 am Saturday morning you would find me parked 6 inches from the screen watching really bad snow filled glitchiness just to get a glimpse of Robotech and later Gundam.

That didn't last very long though... by the end of the 80's saturday morning cartoons were dying because of cable tv. And then pretty soon it just died altogether.
I didn't have cable tv until I was in college and at that time I wasn't watching anything. I found Robotech on vhs though... started buying those only to have the company that release them quit or go out of business. It was expensive too. omg $27 for 2 episodes. Got see Mtv before they stopped playing music.

Finally sat down one day in 2002 ... and asked the kids "what is this crap your watching?" O.o I think it was DBZ
But I stayed put until something I liked finally found me. Rurouni Kenshin and InuYasha started it - then it just snowballed from there.

Like most of you said, I also didn't know what anime even was until around 2003, when I joined here.

When I was about five or six I was up bright and early every morning to catch the latest episode of Sailor Moon. :] Loooooved that show. Then around 2001-2002 I started watching Pokemon and then Yu-Gi-Oh came on the air and I started watching that.

Then in probably late 2002 I remember seeing a commercial for Inuyasha. Mom almost didn't let me watch it because she thought Adult Swim was really dirty stuff, lol. But when she was convinced it wasn't THAT terrible, she let me watch it. I also spent some time watching Toonami with Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin a lot. It pretty much just sparked from there.

my whole SCHOOL watches anime/reads manga.

Read Bleach and Naruto, and then decided to do random mangas on OneManga.com.

Am now reading Mahou Sensei Negima on a regular basis ^^

Also watched a bit of Naruto, Bleach, and watched the entire series of Negima and Clannad, now waiting for Clannad ~After Story~ from my gf. Played Clannad the game though ^^

I just saw an episode of One Piece once as a kid, and decided to watch it in secret (my older siblings used to hate anime).

Then, a few years later, my cousin gave me a stack of old issues of Shonen Jump (dating back to 2003!), and a year after that, my brother recommended Code Geass, Azumanga Daioh, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Lucky Star.

I love it.
