The quiet peace of the forest was disturbed as a clumsy form staggered into the midst. Blood stained the leaves as the theif stumbled past leaves and branches, uncaring of the noise and commotion being caused to the surrounding wildlife. "By the gods!" the theif known as Naje declared as she stumbled over a protuding rock onto her dirty hands and knees. A small bit of vomit rose up her throat and passed her lips as she struggled to take in the air that her lungs so desperately craved. As the adrenaline slowly left her body she felt her strength leave as well. Soon she collapsed onto her side on the forest floor. She allowed her eyes to close only for a few seconds while she regained her senses. As it happened many times before, it felt like the world was spinning inside of her head. She forced herself to open her eyes after the moment had passed and take in her surroundings. Upon first glance, it seemed like an ordinary patch of forest. There were signs of recent animal activity and she could hear birds off in the distance. Her eyes glanced upwards to Helios's position in the sky to get her bearings. 'Odd...I could have sworn I was running east' she thought. Naje let out a small grunt as she pushed herself up into a sitting position. Dull blue eyes scanned her fresh injuries with a bored expression. The source of the blood was coming from a small arrow graze on her arm, marked by a bloody new tear in her already worn coat. There were a few more on her calf. If Naje was more pious, she would have thanked Artemis that the guards were not tracking her with hunting dogs. If that had been the case, she surely would have been caught. There was a rustle in the brush that alerted her to a presence. Blood pounded through her ears as she feared it was a guard who had tracked her to this place. Her fingers flexed as the thought of losing them entered her mind. It was her own avarice that lead her to take such a dangerous risk in a town where theivery was punishable by parting extremities. Despite this all, Naje would still protest that it was the mans fault for flashing his riches so obviously in the middle of a busy market place. As excuses began to bounce around in her head, she couldn't help but plan possible escape routes. It was only then that Naje realized that what she thought were trees were columns heavily covered in plant life. Not only that, but the rock she stumbled upon was a broken slab of marble flooring that spread across a small area of the ground. In her curiosity, Naje had momentarily forgotten the noises. "What in the name of Hades is this place?" she muttered. The sound of a twig breaking broke her from her thoughts again as she turned towards the direction of the noise. "Who's there?!" she demanded. |
