The morning was cool and the sun barely above the horizon as Lysander saddled his horse. Chariton, his bay stallion wasn't very cooperative it took Lysander a while to to get him ready for travel. In truth, the steed's moodiness was a boon in disguise for Lysander wasn't really sure where his destination would be.

Maybe the mountains for some hunting?

He grimaced as he remembered that he had an appointment with his brother, Prince Alexander, to discuss affairs of the Kingdom and Lysander's 'role' now that he had completed his trails of manhood. He sighed as he mounted up and rode out of the stables.

No hunting then.

He rode aimlessly through the streets of Sparta. Not many citizens were about; only a few perioikos hurried about, preparing for the coming market day. Lysander was about to turn towards the gates when his eyes fell on towering Temple of Hera. He reined his horse in and paused a moment at the crossroads.

Eudoxia

Without really knowing why, he made his way towards the temple. He wasn't really sure why he had the sudden urge to see his older sister. He just did. That bothered him a bit; not knowing his own heart and mind. He arrived outside the gates to the temple and dismounted, but did not enter the courtyard.

"What are you doing here, Lysander?" he muttered to himself and looked around the street. It was deserted. Chariton neighed impatiently and Lysander chuckled, "Just a few minutes ago you were complaining about having to go out." Lysander shook his head, "Contrary beast."

Chariton ignored him and turned to nibble on the plants that grew outside the temple. Lysander pursed his lips and tried to think of a good reason for visiting the Temple and his sister. They had never really been close. In fact, Lysander did not know her well at all. Maybe that was why he was here: curiosity?

The small amount of heat of the early morning was comfortable; even when the cold came around Eudoxia still found it way too hot, so the gentle heat of the morning combined with the slight chilly breeze was enough to coax Eudoxia outside. Of course, she had always loved the brilliant flowers that thrived in the heat and seabreeze; and spent a lot of her time keeping the plant life outside the temple alive. It was mornings like this that let her truly enjoy the work she had done for the whole year, as even with the cold coming through the flowers remained brilliant and vibrant.

Eudoxia sat on the railing, letting the bottom of her lower legs be blown at with the fresh air as her violet dress was gently blown around them. The scents of the blooming flowers put her in peace, before her mind almost completely blanked out to what was happening in the world, leaving it open only to the voice of Hera. Of course, her mind was always open to Hera, should it ever need to be. Few people came to the temple in the morning, and those who had stayed overnight were rarely awake.

Unfortunately, she found her thoughts interrupted by the fact she heard a horse travelling toward the temple, instantly she lowered herself from the banister of the temple entrance, and walked back inside. It was not good form to be seen outside by guests of the temple, she had to wait inside ready to be welcoming. As soon as she stepped inside, she was already missing the morning breeze.

As the priestess stepped outside again, showing herself as open and friendly to whoever was coming, she stared at the brother she had not seen for at least a season, was it? She was surprised she still recognised him. "Brother." Eudoxia said cautiously. She didn't know how to respond. "No training today I assume?"

Her voice started him. He had not really made a decision about whether to enter or not. In fact, he had been about to turn back when her soft query halted him. Lysander turned to face her and handed the reins of his horse to a servant who had come to take it.

Well, there is no quick escape now.

Lysander offered his older sister a short, but respectful bow. He grinned and shook his head, "Not this very moment. I would suspect that the Captains will find a reason for some as the day wears on. This is Sparta, after all."

He was a little uncomfortable speaking to her. It was the first time they had spoken in more than a season and the first time that he faced her as an adult. Their conversations had never really been deep or meaningful, which led Lysander to wonder exactly what he was doing here.

"I..." he hesitated and the looked into her eyes before he confessed, "I am not precisely sure why I am here."

Eudoxia smirked, though she was not completely sure why. She didn't know if it was amusement or annoyance at the fact he was so much like every other prince before him. In fact, smirks rarely crossed her lips, so that facial expression was quickly turned into a sincere smile. She was fairly certain it wouldn't have been that obvious anyway, it wasn't exactly a massive smirk or anything.

The wind picked up again, which triggered her to step out of the doorway and walk down the steps to confront her brother, who was still at the bottom. His bow had gone fairly unnoticed, as Eudoxia had never been one for formalities like bowing or curtsying, it was somewhat annoying rather then formal to her. Instead she walked up to her brother until she was standing no more then a meter away. Then, for the first time, her voice slipped out of the indifferent tone it had started in.

"Beware, Lysander, many people come here because they have worked themselves to death, and I would not advise you to do that to yourself. Of course, it is your life, not my own. I do know I may sound a little bit too patronising, but that is how I have seen it to be. You should take a day off sometime." Eudoxia stared at her brother for a moment, before turning slightly and walking back toward the temple, notioning him to follow her.

"Can I offer you something. Sister Myra boiled up a nice chicken broth and it should still be hot, if not I could probably put it over a fire for a bit. Perhaps not as extravagent as you might like, but we do our best." She smiled, trying to be as sincere as she could be. It was, indeed, quite hard since she barely knew him better then a stranger, but she was sincere enough to strangers.

Her warning had a really strange effect on the young prince. It simultaneously infuriated him and chilled his bones. He shivered, partly from the chill and partly from suppressed anger.

Who was she to warn him about over-commitment to a cause? She, who had turned away from her destined life of service to her people and nation, had no right to lecture him!

Even in his anger, Lysander's mind evaluated her words and tested their weight. They were without malice and maybe even hinted at concern. She had a point and, even though her words had been unsolicited, he had come to her, not the other way around. He still wasn't sure why, exactly. Was he seeking guidance? Or seeking to know a sister he never really had a chance to, until now?

He took a deep breath and nodded, "Thank you for the warning, sister. I will consider your words in the spirit it was given. However, my life belongs to Laconia. I made that commitment willingly."

He glanced up at the sky; the sun was steadily exerting its power and it was becoming warmer with each passing minute. He considered her offer and had an idea. He looked at her and hesitated for a moment before saying, "How about going for a ride? We could pack a breakfast and I know this really great place near the river." He grinned mischievously, "Surely, your temple can spare you the morning to spend some time with your dearest brother."

Lysander knew that they had never really been all that close, but he hoped she would catch the hint that he wished to correct that unfortunate state of affairs. He still wasn't sure why he wanted to, but he adored his younger sisters and he was clearly curious about his older sibling.

Eudoxia tensed up as she realised what she had said had made Lysander anxious. That had certainly not been her intention and she wished it had not happened, she was terrible at repairing things she had said. Instead of making to say something, she stood around feeling a bit awkward until he said something. Thankfully for her, it didn't last too long, otherwise she would've felt like a fool.

At that moment, she realised something. She thought of her brother as more of an acquintance, a visitor, then a family member, and she had begun to feel terrible about that. She knew she had to remedy such a thing, as whether or not she agreed with his ideals, his great idea of running off to be a prince like every other royal family member, he was linked to her by blood. She would find a way to make this work. There was no way she could avoid seeing him again, so she wanted to get some kind of friendship to work.

"Well, brother, that is your choice. I shan't do anything to argue with it. I'll just say that I think very highly of your commitment, and I certainly know what commitment is as well. So long as you truly know in your heart that is what you must do, there is nothing I can do to argue about it." She said with a quick nod and a smile.

Her eyes widened a little bit at his offer for a ride. She had always loved riding on horseback, it was her greatest joy. "I'm sure they could spare me for the morning, we usually don't get too many people around until the sundial points further south. As for lunch, I could probably collect some fruit from he plants around here, if you would prefer that to the soup. What would be better suited for a ride, I don't spend much time in the wilds having breakfast, so I don't know what to bring."
