General Information Name: Nikos (of Thrace) Gender: M Age || Birthday: 25 || 30 November Race: Mortal Location: He travels around a lot. So that would mean… All of Greece? But mostly the mainland. He doesn’t set foot on the islands unless there’s some real money involved. Trade/Occupation: Nikos, following the unofficial tradition of his people, is a hired warrior, a little on the mercenary side, almost always willing to work for the highest bidder. Appearance General Appearance: His face is rather angular, appearing as roughly chiselled, with accentuated orbits, short rounded nose, rough mandible and high-sculpted cheekbones. Unlike his compatriots, Nikos has messy shoulder-length hair, dark brown, and a somewhat light skin tone. This is not necessarily a fashion statement but a sign that he has no time or interest to cut his hair short. He usually shaves his beard though, so if he has any, it’s very short. Though there is something about Nikos that truly marks him as different from the common Greek: his piercing light blue eyes. Tall and athletic, Nikos wouldn’t normally pass out like the brawling type if compared with your average Thracian. But his frame is quite advantageous in his line of work, because it bestows on him a special kind of agility. Because of his unimpressive physical form and the nature of his weapons, Nikos is often underestimated by his opponents, which more often than not gives him an edge over them. He acts quickly and efficiently, striking before his victim can figure out what happened. As far as clothing is concerned, Nikos wears a simple linen tunic or shirt and leather pants. Wool replaces the linen in winter. After his violent brawl with Theron, he acquired a two inch scar on his left shoulder plate, from the man’s rhomphaia. The also has some miscellaneous scars all over his body but they can only be spotted after a close inspection. Weapons: He owns three knives, one for each hand and a spare, neatly tucked behind his back. Whenever he doesn’t use them, he stows one on each side of his belt, making sure they’re easy to reach when in need. When used in close-range combat, he makes up for their puny appearance with speed and agility. Because they are small, he can move much faster than a sword wielder, for example. They can be used in middle-ranged combat as well because they’re easy to throw. Nikos is very skilled when it comes to this technique. Nikos also owns a rhomphaia which basically looks like a longer and straighter sickle. However, this weapon he usually keeps tied to his horse, hidden from view and only uses it in dire situations because – he claims – it makes his presence too noticeable, Thracians being known to use them almost exclusively. Although the rhomphaia is quite efficient, it is also messy, enabling the wielder to either thrust it at opponents or outright slash them. Items/Personal Belongings/Ownings: Aside from his weapons, the thick leather belt holding them and the clothes covering his body, Nikos owns a horse. His name is Falx, due to the white spot on his forehead, which seems to curve, very much like a falx, to the left of his head. Falx is a dark stallion, and one with an awful temper at that, known to attempt to throw Nikos of his back on occasion. Personality General Personality: Nikos is not very trusting of people, to the point of paranoia sometimes. This is mainly due to his background: so many betrayals have taught him that trust wasn’t something to be given but to be earned. In this sense, he mistrust most people, if not all, and is likely to change sides very quickly if presented with a better offer. He also avoids joining groups of people if he can help it and even if he has no choice, he keeps a distance and is always on his guard. He can’t sleep unperturbed if he’s not alone. Most people would see that as treachery but he just sees it as looking after the only person who matters: himself. He has no allegiance at all, to any tribe or people, not even to his own. The only one to whom he continues to stay true is the god Apollo (see Background). This makes him perfect for hiring as a mercenary, especially if the employers offer the necessary amount of silver, gold or even food. Nikos is also very clever and calculating. This can be easily seen in his fighting style: he usually waits and weighs his opponents good and bad points before engaging in a fight and doesn’t take on assignments which he knows he doesn’t stand a chance to complete. He looks at things in a cold and realistic way and somewhat despises idealists. His cynicism is focused on one central idea: that man has no real desire than to care for himself; if tempted, even the most honest of mortals would succumb to evil. In a sense, Nikos is a very quirky fellow. Having spent the better part of five years alone, having only his horse to keep him company, shying away from any real human interaction, he has come to talk to himself quite frequently. He also has no real ambitions in life, but wanders through the Hellenic Lands in search for employment and a chance to pay the god back. Although he keeps a considerable distance from everybody else, Nikos constantly longs for someone to bond with, someone who’d understand him and on whom he could put his faith in. This does not prevent him from suspecting everyone of everything though, nor does it mean that he will get into one of those incurable sulking moods. On the whole, he maintains a cheery façade, preferring to have fun and enjoy life, on his own if that’s what the gods wish of him. Hobbies: Nikos makes small wood carvings in his spare time. Quirks: He talks to himself. And Himself talks back! Fighting Favourite Weapon: As previously stated, Nikos’s favourite weapon is the knife. He doesn’t go anywhere without at least two of his three knives. Weapon Skills: Nikos is fairly skilled in sword-fighting, javelin throwing and sling-shooting but he is proficient in knife and rhomphaia-handling. He’s got a very good eye for targets. Strengths in Fighting: Though he is strong, strong enough to handle a one-on-one sword-fight, he is not especially gifted in this area of combat. This is why he has traded the sword for knives which enable him to put his speed and agility into good use. Weaknesses in Fighting: First of all, when confronted with a long-ranged opponent, Nikos falls short because he is a close/middle-range fighter. Also, his knives don’t allow him to parry much of the blows directed at him, so he has to depend on his speed and agility so a strong opponent would surely give him something to worry about. Special Abilities: Not in particular, no. Background Nikos was born in Abdera, a very small town close to where the Nestos River flows into the Aegean Sea. His mother was the daughter of a Thracian Mercenary; he was killed before Nikos was even born. His father’s origin is unknown, but Nikos assumes that he was foreign, because that would explain his fairer skin tone and blue eyes. The reason he doesn’t know is because his mother met and fell in love with the man in one day. They never married because the man disappeared the next day. She assumed he was dead. Achlys didn’t want her son to suffer for her mistakes so she gave him away to a wealthier family who wanted a child; they were the ones who named him, to celebrate the great victory the father had won, the very victory which made the couple rich. However, they weren’t so gracious with him as you’d think, and by the time he was ten years old, Nikos hated them. But one thing about them stuck to him like glue. The father, Mnason was a mercenary whose social position in Thrace had been acquired though his not-so-scrupulous dealing. Twelve-year-old Nikos was taught how to use a sword and a sling by his adoptive father. Since he wasn’t strong enough to face his father with a sword, his frail teenage hands hardly being able to hold it up straight, he resorted to knives. From the first time his long thin fingers touched the handle of a knife, he knew that was his weapon of choice. Much to his father’s displeasure, he often dropped the sword, or javelin and picked up the small weapon. The only other weapon he couldn’t get rid of was the rhomphaia. Yet he was impressive. Mnason came to understand that his son was talented, despite his not quite impressive stature, and worked very hard to teach him all he knew. Nikos wasn’t impressed. Although he knew his father loved him – in a way – he couldn’t go past the beatings he had endured as a child. When he thought he was old enough and – most importantly - strong enough, he ran away from home, not knowing that the two weren’t his real parents, and that their house was not his real home. Sixteen-year-old Nikos then joined a group of young mercenaries, who sought fame and fortune above all else. He liked the idea of following no rules and receiving prizes and for a while it was that way. Killing people didn’t particularly please him, but the perks far outweighed the negative parts. Until, of course, three of their group were hired to take out the rest. They had made dangerous enemies who wanted their heads on a stick. A horrible fight ensued out of which only two walked away. Nikos was one of them. The other was much older man, the oldest of their group, who had taken the boys under his wing. His name was Theron. Both were scarred and disappointed. At least that’s what Nikos felt. There and then, he swore never to trust a soul, no matter how long he knew the person. Nikos and Theron travelled together for a while, keeping each other company, but also keeping an ice-cold distance for neither trusted the other anymore. Two years later, about the time Nikos was to reach the age of 20, they were both hired to stop a caravan on its way to the Oracle of Delphi, carrying a rich man’s offerings to the god Apollo. Fearing the god’s wrath, Nikos was reluctant to intervene but Theron convinced him that they would not suffer the consequences. The night before the ambush, Nikos had a dream in which Apollo told him that Theron had been planning to kill him the next day, after they were to complete their mission. The slightest shadow of a trust still lingering in his soul, Nikos didn’t believe Apollo, thinking the god wanted to pit him against Theron so his offerings would reach the temple. Nonetheless, Nikos took notice of the god’s warning and the next day he would find out that Apollo hadn’t been lying. Right after they had successfully eliminated the opposition and won over the Eupatridae’s gifts for the god, Theron lunged at the young man. If Nikos hadn’t been ready for him, he would have perished. Sad and confused, Nikos rode into Delphi with the cargo and offered it himself to Apollo, grateful for having saved his life. He also vowed that whenever the god would call him, he would answer to repay his debt. Since then, the young Thracian has been wondering around Greece, looking for employment. He made on stop before embarking on his loner’s journey though, and that was when he found out the truth about his parents. As soon as his bafflement was gone it was replaced by anger and he desperately sought his mother and father. He found Achlys after a month of tedious searches and threats and she explained to him the truth about her father and why she had given him up. He didn’t want to understand at first, but his analytical brain told him that she had made the right decision. Parting with her, and feeling his heart heavy for the first time in his life, Nikos left and would never return again, nor would he think much about it.
