Information About Races

The following gives basic information that needs to be taken into account when roleplaying as the various different races in Ancient Greece.

Mortal

This race is pretty much self-explanatory, the normal humans that inhabit the earth. Anything from wanderers of greece, citizens, great warriors or scholars to young Greeks trying to cleave a path in life for themselves.

God

The immortal Greek gods. Each god normally has some purpose, they are usually the gods of something, or a god representing something. Gods can walk among humanity in the guise of human form and often meddle in their affairs. They have the ability to disappear and reappear in another place, or be in a place but not be visible to mortals. Any other abilities the various gods have tends to depend upon what they are the god of, and what possessions they hold. For example, Hades is known to have a helm that grants invisibility, and Zeus is known for his harnessing of lightning.

These are the most important gods and for now are also available as canons:
Code:

Zeus: King of the gods. Son of Cronus (Cronos, Kronos). God of the sky and thunder. Brother of Poseidon and Hades. Husband of Hera, but generally still very much a ladies-man

Poseidon: God (king) of the sea, horses and earthquakes. Brother of Hades and Zeus and father of Polyphemus. Created horses from sea foam.

Hades: Lord of the Underworld and god of the riches found within the earth. Brother of Poseidon and Zeus. Married his cousin Persephone, who he kidnapped. Persephone has to live half of the year in the underworld, the other half she can go to earth again. This is how the world got it's seasons (when she returns to the surfice season turns to spring)

Hera: Goddess of marriage. Zeus' sister and wife. Appears with peacock feathers often. Jealous and vengeful, notably against zeus’ offspring and mortals that crossed her.

Ares: God of war, lover of Aphrodite, behind the back of her husband.

Apollo: God of the sun, music, prophecies and archery. Twin brother of Artemis. Said to be the most beautiful of all gods.

Athena: Goddess of wisdom, strategic war, handicrafts, agriculture and reason, and protector of the City of Athens. Sister of Ares and daughter of Zeus. Helper of heroes and wears a full armor and weapons (thus the goddess of war). A virgin goddess.

Aphrodite: Goddess of love, married to Hephaestus, but lover to Ares, she is very beautiful, also petty, ill-tempered and easily offended.

Hephaestus: God of fire and the forge (god of fire and smiths) with very weak legs. Makes armor for the gods and other heroes like Achilles. Son of Hera. Zeus is his father in some accounts. Married to Aphrodite.

Hermes: God of flight, thieves, and commerce. Messenger of the gods. He showed the way for the dead souls to Hades's realm. Likes to trick people and is very inventive. Hermes invented the lyre using a turtle shell and sinew.

Dionysus: God of wine, and merriment. He represents not only the intoxicating power of wine, but also its social and beneficial influences.

Demeter: Goddess of fertility, grain, and harvest.

Hestia: Goddess of the hearth and home, the focal point of every household. Daughter of Rhea and Cronus. Gave up her seat as one of the Twelve Olympians to tend to the sacred flame on Mt. Olympus for Dionysus.

Demi-god

These people are descendents of both gods and mortals. One of their parents could be a god, or a grandparent etc. Usually these people do not possess many godly powers, such as disappearing or not appearing to mortals. Hercules is an example of this race, he lives almost completely as a mortal, but inherits a colossal strength from his father, Zeus. They often have a small power related to one of the strengths of the god in their family line. Also they can often see Gods even when they are trying to not appear to mortals.

There is a restriction to Demi-gods. We can't have more demi-gods running around the globe then mortals. Please make a Demi-god believable or correct to Greek History.

Centaur

The Centaurs are a race of creatures who are part human, part horse. They have the head and torso of a human, which is joined at the human waist to the horse’s withers, where the neck would start.

By humans Centaurs are believed to be creatures that fight with their animal part and have an untamed nature. And that is why the Centaurs have been driven out of the human kingdoms some hundreds of years before. They mainly lived in the region and kingdom of Thessaly.

This however is not true. The Centaurs are a proud race and have strong emotions. And they are smart and intelligent. They mostly live in peace with their surroundings, and won’t fight until they are forced into battle. They stay away from the human armies that sometimes cross through their lands. But they have an ongoing feud with the Amazons who also live in the same lands as the Centaurs.

There are some however, that are known for lustfulness and drunkeness. But the leader of the Centaurs try to keep them in line. Although some Centaurs do get send away from the Centaur territory to never return again.

To popular belief nowadays most humans think that there are only male centaurs. This belief is wrong, and is a myth in itself that travels amongst humans who have never seen Centaurs before. Female Centaurs are called Centaurides. Most Centaurides are gentle and intelligent, but also loyal, although there are of course exceptions, as there are everywhere.
Centaurs are strong, and surpass general human stenght by far. They also live longer then ordinary humans, there are tales that the oldest Centaur has reached 171 years. Generally though Centaurs can reach the age of 120/125.

The Centaurs live in several settlements throughout the forest in clearings, each settlement has it’s own chief, who leads the settlement and makes the final decisions. The chief is mostly the eldest, or one of the elders of the settlement. And is the leader of the tribe. The elder Centaurs are renowned for their wisdom and respected among the younger Centaurs.
The tribe of Biroid is one of the largest settlements, and live the closest to the Amazon Centaur border.

Centaurs do not have a strong religious system. However they do bury their dead comrades and family members. Mostly it is a simple ceremony where the dead Centaur is buried in the ground with some important belongings and his/her favourite weapon. When a leader of a settlement dies, his eldest son if he is old enough is the successor, or one of the elders is appointed as the new leader. If the latter happens, this is done so by vote by the inhabitants of the settlement.
The elders can, if the leader wish so, give him advice and guidance.

Centaurs do not age the same as mortals. At the age of 16 Centaurs are considered adults, and they become senior around the age of 60. Although this does not mean they are grey and wrinkled. Until about 90 they look rather like a normal middle aged human appearance wise.

Amazon

The Amazon woman live deep within the northern forests and steppe, having several smaller settlements, but the largest is the most powerful and where the Queen of the Amazon lives. The Queen is the leader of the whole Amazon nation. Her successor after she is either killed or dies is her oldest daughter or an appointed ´daughter´. This daughter is specially trained by the Queen herself to act as her successor.

It is not permitted for men to live within the nation of the Amazon. Some also call them ‘killers of men’. The only men who are able to live within the settlements of the Amazon are slaves, but there are only few slaves.

Once per year the Amazon ride to nearest towns of civilization to impregnate themselves in order to prevent their race from dying out. The male children are mostly left on the banks of the river close to these towns, but some might be kept to work as a slave. These male children are kept apart from the female children, so not to make them ‘educated’.

Girls’ training and education starts already at the age of three or four. Playfully they learn to read and write and work how the nature works, growing crops and holding animals. When they reach the age of six, training for hunting and fighting starts. They learn to shoot with bow, learn to fight with swords and knifes and staff weapons. When they are twelve girls specialize in a specific weapon. Mostly half specialises in the bow, and the other half in swords. Making the Amazon woman feared in wars and battles for their tactics.

The Amazon worship the goddess Artemis. Amazon are, even if it may not appear so, deeply connected to the goddess, and hold many dances and rituals. To honour Artemis, but also to thank her for the birth of new animals, the first harvest of crops.
When a warrior falls or an Amazon dies off natural causes, she is granted a burial. The Amazon mourn for their dead for a whole day, the first night after the death of the person there is a wake where the sisters and/or daughters and close friends hold save of the body. They embalm the body with oils and wrap it in white linen, placing weapons and a mask that was the female’s on her head. This is a process of many hours. During the day the Queen pays her respects, as well as other Amazon woman. At twilight the body is carried towards a big stack of wood, which is set to fire once to body lies on top. A ceremony of dancing, music and singing of the dead Amazon’s daughter, sisters and close friends sends the soul to the next life.

When the Queen is killed in battle or died of natural cause, she is granted a large burial. Amazon believe the successor becomes the new Queen the moment when the old Queen has finished her last breath. The Queen’s wake goes the same as any normal Amazon. At twilight she too is send to the next life with a large ritual of dancing, music and singing. The following day is a day of mourning where the woman talk with each other. At twilight of the second day, a ceremony is held for the new Queen to officially make her the new leader over the Amazon nation.

When they feel their lifestyle or their own lives are threatened they will not hesitate to fight. Kingdoms have fought with the Amazon nations to own their lands, with varying results of success, but so far the Amazon have never lost any of their territory to other kingdoms. Further they have frequent run-ins with warlords and their men. Warlords try to capture these strong woman in order to sell them as slaves.

And the Amazon have an ongoing feud with the Centaur who also live closely to the Amazon border. Their feud is mainly about territory and ownership of land and particular landmarks that each see as a mark for their religion. Many other quarrels have long been forgotten, as this feud has been going as long as memory goes back.

It is possible to become a member of the Amazon without having grown up within the Amazon nation. Woman have to proof they are an individual and have skills that are helpful to the nation. Not all woman have to fight, and thus woman who are content with farming and holding animals are very welcome into the Amazon nation. As long as they call to Artemis and are willing to bear children.
