“I’d like to rip off her head, drill three holes into it and use it as a bowling ball.” “Now, now, Athena. Is that what you really want people to hear?” “Yes.” “Maybe so but you realise what the end result would be, don’t you?” “Yes.” “And that is…?” “They’d boo me.” “Uh-huh. Because, believe it or not, people don’t look favourably upon that sort of language. It’s obscene. It’s nasty. It’s unkind, to say the least.” “Don’t people respect honesty?” “Yeah…in certain situations. But, in your case, I’m going to suggest dishonesty in this particular scenario.” “I’m the champion. They should accept what I say and just judge me on what I achieve in the ring.” “That’s another faux pas, Athy. People don’t like being told what they ‘should’ do. It makes them feel angry. It makes them resent you. You need to accept how the public work and then figure out how to manipulate them.” “And the public likes to be manipulated?” “No, but the trick is to manipulate them without them knowing you’re doing it. It’s surprisingly easy. When the public like what they hear they roll with it. They don’t put up a fight. How do you think psychics make a living? If they told people nothing but bad things I doubt they’d stay in business.” “I’d like to decapitate all psychics, too. Liars. Frauds. Conmen.” “Athena.” “Same as religious leaders.” “Athena.” “What I wouldn’t give to be able to headbutt the pope right now…” “ATHENA!” “WHAT!?” “They’re ready for you. And if you mention anyone from any denomination you’re likely to get lynched. Just remember everything I’ve told you and think your answers through. Don’t rush because that’s when things slip out. You’re going to have to be very cool and calculated. Just…don’t be yourself. I have faith in you.” “Paul…thanks.” Athena and Paul James are stood in a quiet corner of the backstage area, he in a pair of jeans and white ‘ACW REBORN’ branded t-shirt, her in a pair of baggy black trousers and a stylish jacket. It seems that the ACW Champion is purposefully dressed unprovocatively in order to garner respect from the female fanbase. “Wish me luck,” Athena whispers as she walks away from her manager. She makes her way over to ACW interviewer, Jen Barrett. She is all dolled up with lipstick and make-up. The blonde looks very fetching in a classy red dress fit for a ball. Barrett is holding a microphone and welcomes the ACW Champion with a winning smile. “Hi, Athena,” says Jen. “Thanks a lot for taking this interview. If you don’t mind we’ll get right into it.” Athena smiles through gritted teeth. “Sure. Go ahead.” “ACW has had managerial problems lately. The federation actually ceased to exist for about 24 hours. Has this affected your preparation for your upcoming match?” The champion looks over her shoulder to Paul James. He nods, encouraging her to answer the question uncontroversially. “No. As a champion it’s my duty to stay focussed and be ready for any eventuality.” “Your fight, of course, is against Julia Peach, an up and comer here at ACW. If she wins she is guaranteed a title shot in the future. How do you rate your chances?” “Well,” Athena starts. “She is a remarkable athlete and has a very bright future in professional wrestling. She will be a hard nut to crack. I respect Julia Peach very much.” Paul James smiles and gives a thumbs up sign in the background. “Some say Julia’s charisma is her strong point. Would you agree?” “She’s a very charismatic woman but I think it’s fairer to say that she’s a well-rounded fighter. She doesn’t lack in any one area. That’s what makes her a great opponent for any fighter.” “Impact is ten days away. Apart from your match, the main event, which fight are you most looking forward to?” Athena takes a moment to think before answering: “The Intercontinental Title match. It was a shock when Bella Jones resigned from ACW and it happened to vacate a major title. I know the battle royal will determine a worthy successor to Bella’s title. But I’m also looking forward to the big elimination tag team match. It should be very exciting.” Jen Barrett: “And, of course, new general managers will be named on the 23rd. What are your thoughts on this? Who would you like to see in those positions?” Athena strokes her hair back. “I don’t mind. I trust ACW to make the right decision. As long as the GM’s are fair and just I will have no complaints. The most important thing is…” Athena swallows hard. “the fans.” “Well,” Jen says, relieved. “It has actually been a pleasure to interview you, Athena. Good luck with your match against Julia Peach.” Jen Barrett chuckles. “That girl likes her computer games, doesn’t she?” Athena laughs, politely. “Yes. She’s a fucking geek!” Jen Barrett just looks a Athena with a gaping mouth. This is a live interview at prime time. “Well,” Athena starts. “Thanks for the interview. Goodbye.” Athena turns around and walks away from Jen Barrett. She approaches Paul James, who is looking at Athena, gobsmacked. Athena speaks: “Went well.” “What the hell was that?” Paul James asked, exasperated. “What?” Athena asks. Paul James shakes his head and walks away. “What? What’s the matter?” The scene fades to black as the ACW Women’s Champion walks after her manager. Edited by Boomslang, Sep 2 2009, 07:56 AM.
