Joern Grubbletin wheezes as he stumbles up the onto the plateau midway up Mount Nocturna. He coughs as he tries to catch his breath in the thin mountain air. When he has finally recovered, he tells your group: "The entrance isn't far from here. And knowing the number of monsters in the region, you'd best keep your eyes and ears open. They don't always stay inside the caves after all".

The journey from the town of Shadowlin Mill to this halfway plateau on Mount Nocturna took from early morning until now, late afternoon. The sun wasn't too hot on the climb thankfully, but now it is beginning to get a little chilly.

Joern gets back on his feet and leads the group along the plateau. After bushwhacking through 100 feet or so of sparse foliage, you see what must be the opening to the passage to the underworld. A 20ft. tall carving of a skull done directly into the cliff side is before you. The mouth of the skull is the entrance to a tunnel, and from inside the tunnel is a faint blue glow.

"That's as far as I take you," Joern grumbles. "Just remember our deal. The next time I make this climb, I want it to be when you are leading me to the fountain."

Joern says his goodbyes and trudges away through the cedars you just walked through.

Before you have time to make any preparations to enter the cave, the sky completely darkens. Directly above you a star shines brilliant red. This phenomenon lasts for a few moments and then the sky goes back to normal.

Well, this wasn't exactly what Meshken had planned when he thought of his first adventure as an Elan. Traveling with a half-orc couple and babysitting his boss' son while exploring some possibility of a passage to the underworld.

But what if it was true? Well, he'd get to hone his new skills as a psychic warrior at least. He ran his fingers through his shoulder length red hair and thought about the adventures he use to have as a general for the old kings army. Of course, that whole system became messed up when "Emperor" Quinn found the fountain. Everything changed for Meshken, who was then known as Sarabor. He was with the group who thought they could fight the Quinn. Yeah, that didn't work out so well. The only reason he survived was because a Culler saved a group of them. We were all potentials for transformation, and what did he have to lose? Sarabor became Meshken and set about trying to find a passage to the underworld. If lowly soldier Quinn could do it, then why not former General Sarabor, newmade psychic warrior.

That is, if the old gnome knows his underground passages.

On that though, the group comes upon the doorway.

Impressive, Meshken thinks, It's at least the grandest cave I've seen... Is it just me, or is it getting dark... Ummm, that's spooky... Could it be that there really was a prophecy? Naw, I'm sure it was just a coincidence...

(This post is for Grimsy)

Wow! This is the moment I was born for. The air smells sweet, the sun is shining, the birds are... Well the birds are non-existent and the air is actually not to good smelling. Probably all the monsters in that really foreboding cave that dad lead us to. But that's ok, this is my moment of destiny. Dad put his heart and soul into my journey that starts today. I won't fail - Grimsy's train of thought is interrupted by the sky turning black.

"Holy crap!" Grimsy shouts after his brief moment of being stunned.

Well so much for the sun shining. I guess this is just as awful a day as destiny can really be.

"Heh... Guys, do you have any clue what that was all about? I mean it is a GOOD sign of destiny right?"

Ada, a strong looking half-orcish woman, seems bored. She mindlessly swings her heavy flail, everybody accompanying her usually stays at least 5ft away. This journey is a good way to practice her urge to hit things, to her that is fun. Thinking about that fountain, and wishes makes her head hurt.

Ada climb long way. Ada not hit anything in while. Why it take so long to get to Underplace? Ooooh a spider, Ada squish spider...wait. Where spider go, ground is dark. Why ground go dark?

She stands and ponders this for a minute or so until she gazes up and realizes the ground became dark because the sun went red.

"Destiny? Ada not care, that super...superstitot...crap. Storm on way likely. Ada go in cave now!"

And then she moves to go in the cave unless anybody wishes to stop her.

"...it is a GOOD sign of destiny, right?"

Surface dwellers. It may be that gnomes often life underground, but like all surface dwellers they cry the moment their lights go out. The red star is a strange sign though; perhaps a manifestation of the eye of Grummsh, staring down at a group of (mostly) orcs about to head to glory? A little close to the skull now to check if there's something distinguishing the left eye? Ah well, superstition is for the shamans.

Waka'naugh leans down close to Grimsy, resting a gigantic hand on his tiny shoulder, whispering (with orc breath!) in his ear:
"Stop the nasal squealing, runt. It might be just the thing to let them know lunch is on its way."

After a brief chuckle at the gnome's discomfort, Waka pulls out a pair of javelins (one in each hand) and quietly follows Ada into the tunnel.

Better that the big orc goes in first anyways, I suppose. She's too dumb to explain what a "trap" is, and that way the Elan will have a light on behind me and not ruin my ability to see down here... in theory.

"Hey Wakanag... Wakanagh... Hey Waka, ease up on the gnome. There's nothing to gain by scaring him over some silly superstition. We have to work at this together."

This big lug better not be a problem to us. Meshken knew that if we were to get anywhere in the underworld we'd need to work as a tightly knit unit, everyone watching everyone backs.

"And wait up you two, I have to light up a torch."

Despite Meshkin's protests for Ada to slow down, she does not. Instead she calls back.

"Meshkin hurry instead of Ada stop."

Lothar pouts duskily to himself, hanging out in the back. He had done all this research, all this soul-searching, and none of it led him here so much as a crazy old man with a penchant for collecting the oddest folk in the country. And all at once, they were here? This unimpressive barely-big-enough-to-house-an-orc hole in the wall is it? It just seems so, so...

Whoa. What's that? It's getting darker! That's a pretty neat effect. I guess maybe this old man has more than just air and sentiment inside that head of his.

The other slack-jaws, making inane comments to themselves, seem impressed by this "phenomenon". And actually, Lothar is a bit impressed himself.

"Okay, so maybe this cave is it after all. Let's see what it's really made of," Lothar says almost inaudibly to no one in particular, before striding inside.

Ada enters to cavern. The temperature inside is sharply higher than the chilly mountain air. Ahead she sees a circular room of 30ft. radius with a large bonfire in the center, burning with blue flames. There doesn't seem to be any smell of smoke. The room looks to have sculpted stone - it was clearly built with purpose.

Everyone else is able to enter the room moments after Ada.

The room has a large, closed, iron door at the far end of the room. In front of the door are two suits of armor standing as if they were someone inside. Gaps in the armor show that there is nothing inside. Inside the helmets of these creatures are flickering blue flames - similar to those of the fire. They are armed with halberds. They don't move at all.

Otherwise there isn't much of note in the room.

Lothar sees the blue, smokeless fire and thinks it might be magical.

Spellcraft check (1d20+7): 18

He doesn't know quite what's up with those suits of armor, but they look dangerous. He's going to stand with the fire in between him and them. "I wonder if that gate can be opened somehow," he says to the party. In fact, there might be a switch or something. From his vantage point in the near side of the room, he will execute a quick search.

Search check (1d20+3): 6
