DISCLAIMER: This board is merely for discussion of development (and, later, gameplay elements) of an upcoming MMO known as Zed Online. Do not expect any downloadable content until an official site is ready. Also, in case you're wondering, ZO is far from even being workable. It is a fledgling, long-term project with a team of 2, only one of which who is actually programming it.

ZOdevlog #1 - 9/1/08

Posted by Fission (Admins) at Sep 1 2008, 02:12 AM. 0 comments

Welcome to the first ZOdevlog, a small, blog-like entry from me, Fission, the head (and only) programmer for ZedOnline.

First off, let's look at what I'm working on at the moment

- Graphics engine

This will have a unique (that is, I came up with it through mind power and not by looking at online resources) system that uses a cycle of pointers to the next sprite in the animation. It is pretty complicated, and so far I have it down on paper but not computer.

- World engine (ZOwie)

The world interaction engine (now known as ZOwie [pronounced "Zoey"]) will be an adaptive, tile-based system. It will have pointers to the objects that are in its small area (objects can go beyond the size of the tile, of course) and will be used for player interactions with the world (looting, barricading, etc.) and may even be used for the combat system.

I plan on adapting this engine to other applications (top-down shooters, etc.) and may be releasing the source at some point. This may not happen, though, if ZedOnline becomes popular enough to start bringing in cash.

- Lua-application interface coding

I haven't really started on locking Lua and the main engines that run ZO together since it is so early in development.

- Maps

Way too early to think about this.

- Stat/skill/level engine

This is pretty much nil at this point, but Zaghuran and I have been brainstorming the best way to organize this. So far we have three main stats branching off different skills to unlock more skills and abilities. It's fairly complicated but should provide an original experience for any hardcore MMOer.

- Inventory and item handling

This has a lot done for it but has yet to have a test build. It runs on much the same principle as the graphics engine (which may cause major problems) and doesn't have anything done besides bare-bone handling.

It's 2:12 here and my brain has fried. Peace out and expect another ZOdevlog either next week or the week after.

Graphics Update

Fission and I believe that we will be able to do so much more with this game if we make hand drawn graphics in the place of sprites.

We feel that we will be able to bring more to Zed Online as a whole if we use hand drawn graphics over sprites. It will also greatly expand the possibilities that will be available to the game.
