Survival Wolves
In the beginning, a pack of wolves, called the Solnite Pack, lived in a wide valley. They lived peacefully, for there were no wolves on any side of their border. Then, one day, a black wolf was found in the small forest in the valley during the season of autumn. They had no idea where the little wolf pup came from. It was definitely too young to be without a mother, and the scent on him was unfamiliar. Not wanting to leave the small pup in the Shadow Forest, as they called the forest they found him in, they adopted him into their pack and named him Shadow. Soon, winter was upon the Solnite Pack, and snow lay over the valley, up to the wolves' bellies in places. One night, a party of wolves went out to hunt. In the sky, the aurora borealis was lighting up the moonless sky. It was then that the pack found another small wolf pup, all on it's own, too young to be without a mother, but with no mother in sight, almost covered in snow. The hunting party took the small wolf, who was smaller than the black wolf had been, being a female, but was the same age as they had found the black wolf previously, and the pack adopted her too. They named her Aurora. And then, summer was upon the Solnite Pack. A small patrol of the pack was following the river that runs through the valley, until they followed a small creek that wound it's way in the opposite direction of the Shadow Forest. It was then that they found the third wolf pup, again too young to be without it's mother, the same age they had found the black wolf and white wolf before him. His fur was silver, and slick from water, for they found him lying in the creek. They adopted this small pup, too, and named him Silver, after the name of the creek - Silver Creek. And now, the trio of wolf pups live in the Solnite Pack... for now.

"Aurora, slow down so I can catch you!" yelped Silver, chasing Aurora around. "No," Aurora yelps back, glancing behind her at Silver, "You have to catch me fair and square!" Silver slows to a stop, growling playfully. Aurora slows, too, making sure she is out of his leaping range before turning around to face him, also growling. Silver leaps, his silver fur glistening in the warm sun, but misses as Aurora leaps out of the way and starts to run away from him again. "Come back!" Silver calls, scrambling to his paws and lumbering after the more graceful Aurora.

Lying in the shade of the Solnite Pack's cave, Shadow watches the duo run around in front of the cave's mouth, his head on his paws. He was only a few moons older than the playful Aurora and Silver, but he was more solitary than the others. He seemed to nearly blend into the shadows with his dark black fur.

Aurora shakes Silver off, who had clumsily fell down again, and pads up to Shadow. He raises his head, his deep green eyes piercing straight into Aurora's bright blue ones. "Come on, you lazy lump of fur," Aurora teases, "Come and play with us!" Shadow sits up, a faint smile on his face. "You've only asked that seven times already," he teases back, then sighes and gets up. Aurora, wagging her tail at finally getting him up, doesn't notice Silver, as loud as his clumsy paws are, creeping up behind her. Shadow does, however, and looks past her at him. Aurora looks around as Silver pounces. Shadow immediately pounces on top of him, too.

The trio roll around, laughing and yelping delightedly. A she-wolf sitting in front of the cave's entrance smiles as she watches the three pups playing. When the playing starts to turn rough, she stands up and prods them apart. "Come on, now," she says gently, "Why don't we go inside now?" They moan and her smile widens. "You don't want to miss your ceremony, do you?" the she-wolf asks in a mock-serious tone. The pups immediately stop their whining. "We'll go inside, Heather," Shadow says, then looks at the other two, who nod. They all three follow the brown she-wolf, Heather, into the shady den.

Heather is like the trio of pup's guardian. Since they were found, she has raised them. She was able to feed them milk when they were younger because she still had milk after all the pups she had died at birth just before Shadow was found. She agreed to take care of them all, even though they were not her own and were not even related to each other, let alone the pack. And even though they weren't her own, she loved all three, and felt proud that, once the full moon came up that night, they were going to have their Howling Ceremony.

It was in the Solnite Pack's tradition to, after one of their pup's reached a certain age, when they would be eating meat from that point on in their life, they would hold a gathering, in which they started the howl at the full moon. It was a very important and ancient tradition of the Solnite Pack.

Shadow was just behind Heather as they entered the den. The three pups hadn't realized that the sun was already going down. They'd been playing around the whole day and having too much fun. Silver was shivering with excitement, and Aurora felt like bouncing around on her paws. Shadow, always the quietest, didn't show any sign of excitement, even though inside, he was very happy.

Soon, the sun was down and midnight was creeping closer and closer. In what seemed like forever to the pups, it was midnight. They knew the full moon hung straight up above their heads now. The alpha male and alpha female beckon for the rest of the pack to follow them out of the cave for the trio's Howling Ceremony.

Outside, moonlight streamed down onto the valley, nice and bright. The three pups followed after the two alphas, followed immediately by the rest of the pack. The alpha male lead the three pups around the side of the cave, which rose high above them. From the side, there were ledges that resembled stairs that lead to the weathered, flat top of the rocky cave. The alpha leapt onto the first ledge, then bounded up the others to the very top of the cave. The trio exchange glances nervously. Finally, Shadow leaps onto the first ledge, then scrambles up the rest, closely followed by Silver, then Aurora. Silver almost slipped once, but Aurora managed to help balance him again.

Once they reached the top and stood behind the alpha male on the smooth, flat stone top of the cave, they could see the other wolves of the pack gathered in front of the cave's mouth. The alpha walked up to the very edge of the cave's flat top, and barked clearly, "Tonight, under the light of the full moon, three pups are ready for their Howling Ceremony." A gentle breeze blew, ruffling the fur of all the wolves, but everything was completely silent. The alpha continues, but he backs away from the edge first, "Shadow, Aurora, Silver. Step forward and begin the Howl of the Moon."

The three pups - no, they should be referred to as wolves now, not pups - step up to the edge, standing side-by-side. Slowly, they tip their heads back, beginning to howl. The musical noise of the wolves grew louder and louder as the pack slowly joined in, one by one, by rank. The alphas join in, then the betas, then the middle ranks, and then finally the omegas, until the air is vibrating with the music of the wolves.

The air of night filled with the howling of the wolves, none of the Solnite Pack's wolves heard the faint noise of pawsteps drawing closer, brushing the grass. Their heads titled toward the moon, eyes closed, not one of the Solnite Pack saw the approaching dark shapes. Not until it was too late...

Everything started moving so fast to the young wolf trio. First a shriek splits through the night, and then tooth and claws flash. The Solnite Pack consisted of twelve wolves, but the strange wolf pack was composed of more. Many more. At least twenty wolves were on the side of the newcomers. The twelve wolves of the Solnite Pack, which included the trio, had no chance of winning if the opposing pack had intentions to destroy them all.

The howling at the moon stopped immediately as the Solnite wolves tried their hardest to defend their home. The alpha male was already on the ground, fighting with the rest of the Solnite pack. But the trio were frozen in horror on top of the cave. They were all staring, wide-eyed at the wolf who had shrieked. She had fallen to the ground, her shriek cut off abrutly as the wolf leading the opposing side bit into her throat. The trio's guardian, Heather, was dead.

The fighting commenced below the young wolves before their eyes. Aurora was the first to move. She nudges Shadow and Silver roughly, making them come to their senses, too. They leap down from the cave's top and attempt to join in the fighting. Seemingly immediately, the alpha female blocks them from getting in the fray.

"Run, little ones," she barks at them, sadly. "But, Pal-" Shadow starts to argue, but she shoves them back as an enemy wolf lunges at them. "You must go!" she says more urgently. "There is no hope here! You three are still too young to be fighting! You must go!" Then, the same wolf that had lunged before lunges again and engages the alpha female into a fight. The three young wolves step back in surprise. Shadow starts to bound forward, but Aurora steps in his way.

"Move, Aurora!" Shadow growls at her.
"Shadow, we have to do as Palla says! We have to go!"
"I'm not about to leave the only pack I've ever known!"
"It's the only pack any of us have known!" growls Aurora, meaning Shadow, herself, and Silver.

Shadow flinches back, and Aurora takes advantage of his hesitation to shove him in the opposite direction. "There's no hope here," Aurora mutters bitterly to Shadow and Silver, "at least we can do as Palla tells us. There's nothing else we can do. We don't even know how to fight." Shadow hesitates again, then shakes his head slowly.

Just then, another enemy wolf looks in their direction. Obviously targeting them as the weakest, it turns and bounds at them, yellow-tinted teeth barred. A threatening growl rips out from Shadow's throat, but the enemy continues advancing, then lunge, bowling both Aurora and Shadow over at the same time. Aurora felt teeth meet in the scruff of her neck, barely missing her throat. Shadow could feel claws digging into his side and they both yelped with pain.

Silver leaps at the bigger enemy, but mistakes the distance and leaps over the enemy wolf, his back claws just barely scraping it. The enemy wolf turns on him next, and easily knocks him over with one swipe of his paws. Aurora and Shadow take the distraction to scramble upright. The enemy whips around and returns to them. Shadow manages to leap on top of him, knocking him off balance slightly. Aurora immediately follows his move, and they manages to, with their combined weight, keep him down. Silver scrambles up now and leaps onto it, too, landing squarely on top of it this time.

The enemy wolf struggles underneath the three young wolves. Just as it seems to give up, its teeth meet in Silver's leg. Silver yelps, and tumbles off. The wolf struggles violently, slinging Aurora and Shadow off it. Aurora hits the ground hard, the air knocked out of her lungs. Shadow skids on the ground, but manages to stay upright. Aurora, gasping for air as she scrambles up again, notices that the fight with the one enemy wolf was causing them to get farther and farther away from the Solnite wolves. The enemy wolf was making them back up, farther and farther from the pack. Aurora looks at Shadow, who is breathing heavily with a scratch on his side, to Silver, lying on the ground with his back leg bleeding, his sides heaving. Shadow seems to notice Silver's condition, and feel his own, and see Aurora's sides heaving, her body trembling with the effort to stay upright.

Silver manages to stand up again, but he has to limp on his back leg. "Silver," he murmurs when he reaches the black wolf's side, "we can't... we can't fight even one wolf, let alone the many others back at the cave. We have to... we have to... go." Shadow, growling, looks at Silver, then Aurora, then Silver again, and then the enemy wolf, who is still causing them to step backwards, getting farther and farther from the cave. Shadow sighs, then nods, whipping around and running as fast as he can. Silver, putting his sore leg back to the ground, bounds after him, not quite able to keep up, but managing. Aurora flees last, making sure Silver doesn't trip like usual. She looks back, but the enemy wolf had stopped advancing at them and was standing where they had been, glaring after them.

Shadow, Aurora, and Silver kept running. Running and not thinking of when to stop. Finally, Silver collapses on the ground in exhaustion, his leg still bleeding, but only slightly. Shadow stops, too, to examine Silver's leg, his sides really heaving for air now. Aurora slows to a halt on the other side of Silver, panting. The three look around to see where they were, but the area was unknown to them. They had left Solnite Valley...
