Of the many things that went undeveloped in Dragonball proper, two of the big ones that fans have always had to wrestle with when crafting their own fics and extended universes are A) the backstory of the Saiyajin race and Planet Vegeta as a whole, aside from what little we have to go on (mostly from the filler in episode 20), and B) what Saiyajin females would have been like. Toriyama is notorious for being terrible at writing female characters. #18 is about the only one whose potential didn't totally go down the toilet when she became a mother, and even then you could argue that it's because she's a more interesting character than her husband, already got development when she was a villain, and isn't even a human. Meanwhile, what other female characters do we have to set examples in Dragonball? There was Lunch, whose extreme moodswings when sneezing can very easily be seen as a stereotype for PMS...Bulma, who was pretty much nothing but completely self-centered and narcissistic until she had a baby, after which point the character settled down quite a bit and was seen more as 'the scientist' than 'the alpha bitch'...the actual alpha bitch being Chi-Chi, who took a childhood promise so seriously she pretty much tricked her husband into marrying her and as soon as he gave her a babby she seemed to stop giving a shit about said husband in favor of doting on her son to extreme degrees...being an 'overprotective mother' doesn't even come close to an accurate description, and let's not forget that Chi-Chi was a pretty competent fighter at the end of DB, too - that was quickly thrown out the window and she just became 'Gokou's crazy wife'. And what about Videl? I loved Videl. She had so much potential to actually become what the other female characters never did and could have even fought alongside the others with a bit of plot hax (if she can learn to fly, she's just a step away from shooting energy blasts, after all). Even without any superpowers she held her own for quite a while against Babidi's possessed and steroid-overdosed-as-fuck minion Spopovich - she even fucking broke his neck, which, if he was a normal human, would have killed him. Videl was cool as fuck, and even became a crimefighter alongside Gohan...uuuuuntil they got married and had a babby. Then Videl rode the Useless Train with the other females of Dragonball. And let's not even bring Pan into this, because I fucking hate Pan. The only reason she got a little limelight is because she was Gokou's granddaughter and a kid, so she was perfect to tag along with the now-kid-again Gokou on adventures in space. We all know that if GT didn't start out with such a different formula that Pan would have taken a backseat as well. And it would have been better if that happened, because seriously, fuck Pan. So where am I going with this? Just because the series chose not to elaborate on them, it doesn't mean that female Saiyajin were any rarer than males, which I think a lot of fans tend to assume. Well, you could chalk it up to the same disregard for female characters that we never actually see any female Saiyajin except for Selypa in the Bardock special (but like the rest of his team she gets no character development and is quickly killed off), but in a way, that's a good thing. It means that Saiyajin females are pretty free from Toriyama's cruel grip because he never established that they, too, would settle down and become worthless characters just because they had them some babbys. And even better - as a warrior race, with a totally different set of values than human (especially Japanese) society, their strength would definitely be valued over their ability to birth heirs. So even if we don't really get any female Saiyajin characters in the series, there's enough precedent established that we can probably assume they did not settle down and stop fighting just because they had little ones to look after. What precedent, you ask? There's tons of evidence in the series we can go by. Look at the Bardock special for instance. Not only is Selypa treated no differently than the other warriors on the team, aside from having more form-fitting clothes, but more importantly is the way Bardock reacts to the birth of his son...and what we know from the beginning of DBZ in the first place. Saiyajin babies are sent off to conquer distant planets. They don't need no mommy to stay home and pamper them, so of course the females are free to go continue their careers as warriors!! Bitches probably don't even stop fighting until the minute dat water breaks. Though, I guess realistically when they know it could happen any time they'd have to take some leave of absence from the battlefield, because no matter how tough she is, a girl giving birth is gonna be wide open (pun honestly not intended, I didn't know how else to word it, I swear!!) for attack. Still, giving birth is probably less of a process than it is for humans, because Saiyajin females are tougher and used to pain...it's probably a quicker process and recovery as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if the mother was back on the battlefield the very next day. Like I said - since Saiyajin babies are sent away mere days after birth, and we see that there's some sort of nursery for them in the meantime (particularly in the Bardock special and Movie #8 in Brolli's flashbacks), I doubt there's very much 'mothering' to be had, short of actually giving birth. And remember when Bardock was summoned to see his son? Where was the mother? Nowhere to be found. Bardock just visited little Kakarotto in a nursery full of doctors and techs who presumably fed and changed them after checking out their power levels. Why wasn't the mother sitting there cuddling her baby, or lying in bed recovering from birth? Bitch was probably already putting on her armor and getting ready to go back to work. That tells me that female Saiyajin were almost certainly not treated as weak creatures only good for taking care of children, the way Toriyama's other female characters often seem to be. Another good example is Vegeta. Look how easily he adjusted to life on earth - the most he struggled with was his pride going from a highly-regarded prince to just another guy who's weaker than Gokou. He still knew exactly how to bed a human woman and conceive a child with her, and once he got over his pride issues he didn't treat it like anything unusual that he and his baby-mama live together and become monogamous mates. This tells me that Saiyajin life wasn't much different than humanity, except with more value on physical strength - so, like Selypa, most Saiyajin females were probably warriors just like the males. Between that, and the fact that a lot of Saiyajin are just sent off to distant planets as infants, it makes me think Saiyajin parents of either sex were probably not very hands-on parents. Maybe the elders who could no longer fight took care of the children who weren't sent off to other worlds, like nannies? Or maybe, like the ones sent into space, even the babies growing up on Vegetasei are just left to fend for themselves - after all, if they're too weak to survive on their own, they don't deserve to live!! So that's probably the only thing I can see being different between Saiyajin and humans as far as that goes. I wouldn't be surprised if pregnancy was shorter than 9 months because the mother (and maybe baby) are made of tougher stuff than humans, and Saiyajin babies are obviously not as fragile as human babies - Gokou was an infant when he smashed his head and survived, so, the whole 'soft spot' thing proooobably isn't an issue. I mean, I guess you could also theorize they all die during childbirth or something, and that's why they never seem to be around - but think about how strong Saiyajin are, and that we see females as Saiyajin warriors as well. Does it really make sense that they'd be so weak as to deliver a baby and die from it? Or, from another standpoint, if their females were weak enough to die so easily, would the Saiyajin race even bother letting their women become warriors alongside the males? It doesn't seem likely to me. So Saiyajin mothers probably just birth their babies and have very little, if any, influence on their lives after that - in fact I'm inclined to believe it might work that way for both parents, like some species of animals. Of course, things might work differently for Vegeta and other high-class Saiyajin, since Vegeta seemed to have some form of relationship with his father (with Freeza mostly being the cause for any strain between them), but most likely that logic doesn't apply to the lower classes. Saiyajin couples probably meet on the battlefield - I can see it now, something like Male: Hey sexy mama, wanna kill all Female: Only if you can prove that your seed is even worth my time!! *they fight* Male: *pant* You're pretty good. Female: You're not bad yourself. Not that you could have beaten me if I went all-out. Male: Oh please, you think I was going all-out? You wouldn't stand a chance if I was being serious. Female: Oh yeah?! Male: Yeah!! Female: OH YEAH?! Male: YEAH!! And then they fucked. Some months later, the female gives birth and the baby is sent to destroy a distant planet. Mating for life, the couple returns to the battlefield together, fighting alongside each other when they're not trying to show each other up for being stronger than their partner. The sexual tension rises again as they compete, and the process begins again. AND THAT'S HOW SAIYAJIN BABIES ARE MADE. So, those are just some of my thoughts on what female Saiyajin would have been like. What do you think? |
