A Sunday morning fire on the north side of town was caused by portable space heaters, an official said.

Ken Helms, Enid Fire Department assistant fire marshal, said the fire at 3:11 a.m. at 624 W. Cherry was caused by too many portable space heaters plugged into the same circuit.

The circuit overloaded, he said, and electrical wiring in the attic caught on fire.

The fire caused $5,000 in property damage and $500 in content loss. The value of the home is $30,000.

Helms said according to an Enid Fire Department report, light smoke was coming from the eaves of the home, and heavier smoke was observed in the attic.

Firefighters found a small fire in the wall in the attic space of the front bedroom. They were there for a few hours trying to control the blaze, Helms said.
