What is journalism?

Hi,
I am a freshman comm major at PSU, and during a recent meeting of my Intro to Comm seminar, my professor brought this up. After a solid hour of bickering, however, we had little to show.
Thus, I submit several questions to the Ars community:
What is journalism? What is its purpose, and what are the moral and ethical obligations of those who claim to be "journalists."
Can we determine a set definition for journalism, or does its very nature dictate that its meaning cannot be confined, that it will continue to grow and expand to meet the publics needs?
Do the obligations of the media as a commercial enterprise outweigh their obligation to inform the public?

Please help.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
