Music's good right? Well, I've been spending a lot of time as a shelf stacker in a music shop these days for some extra cash. And I can't help but notice some deterioration in culture. I mean, the rock and indie forum was full of stuff such as Taylor Swift and Brittany Spears, I assumed they were just placed there wrongly at first, but then I saw the categories with the album names written upon them, and it made me wonder. Well, my first question's rather simple. What IS rock, nowadays? And what IS mainstream? Next, same store, same area. A few of the newer releases (Placebo, for example) aren't really putting much thought into their album artwork any more. Which, in my opinion, was perhaps one of the greater arts beside the music itself. Since one's that looked good always caught your eye, no matter what you were searching for. So, it's becoming a dying art, perhaps? Second's pretty easy too, was album artwork a lost cause from the start, or is it still thriving onward? Finally, are TV shows like X-Talent or Britain's Got Factor (you may not be aware of these shows, dependant upon which country's you occupy) killing music? I'm sure you've heard Simon Cowell rant on and on about how singing is the core of music. But it just isn't. If singing was the core of music we'd be living in an endless stream of opera. |
| Everybody loves the universe. If you can look past the black holes, the rogue asteroids, the gym teachers, and that paper boy who keeps throwing your magazines into the bushes, it's a simple place most of us can call a happy home. It's a good thing. However, even the obviously non-sentient universe has a sense of irony. You see, the universe is going to end. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not 10120 years from now, but it will happen. One of the ways science predicts our inevitable demise is by pissing off God. But that's another story. Instead, another way that science predicts the universe will cease to function is through the "heat death of the universe" theory. | |

WHAT? Taylor Swift and Brittany Spears in the Indie section? But this is blasphemy! I happen to be an Indie-head and they are not qualified to join the Indie section. They can go join the Bad Music That Happens to be Popular But Really Shouldn't Be section. Someday I'm going to open a music store, and that is where they are going to go, should I happen to be tolerant enough to actually sell them. I guess it depends what genre or artist you're looking at to determine whether album artwork is a dying art. I really like designing album artwork and band logos for bands and albums that don't exist. Spoiler: click to toggle

'People want to know why I do this, why I write such gross stuff. I like to tell them I have the heart of a small boy... ...and I keep it in a jar on my desk.' 'Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good.' - Stephen King | |

WARNING, BIG PICTURES. Spoiler: click to toggle Oh, you may also have been wondering why I spell "Britney" as "Brittany". Well, thing is. I know how to spell people's names, Brittany Spears does not. Edited by God., Aug 31 2009, 05:42 PM.

Neither do I, as you can clearly see above - I won't begrudge you for it. I can't see the Muse album you put up, but I Googled some of their covers to get the general idea. And Placebo too, which apparently was the band who's song my sister was having me listen to the other night. Blind Guardian has some nice album covers: Nightfall A Twist in the Myth They're a very Lord of the Rings based heavy metal band. |
