This topic is partly for my benefit, but also for the discussion. What are some major (plot-wise) cliches and minor (sentences, phrases) cliches that you've read and noticed?

Also, do you think plot patterns are cliches? For example, a fantasy novel might be about a group of characters, each with different motives, who go on a quest to find something. That is the quest pattern. If another writer writes a story in the same way, and then another writer, and another writer, is it a cliche?

And for me: Is hypnosis a cliche? I'm planning out a urban fantasy novel, and my MC can hypnotize other people (not that she likes to), but when other people stare at her too long, it has a hypnotizing effect on her, and she sometimes faints. The world isn't fantasy, like I said, it's urban fantasy, so it's not like Charlie Bone in which everyone has magical powers.

So if you were an agent, and I mentioned her hypnosis in my query letter, would that put you off for being a cliche, or not?

Cliches like... um, I can't actually think of any right now. D:

But I wouldn't say your hypnosis thing is cliche. Not at all.
