Everybody loves the universe. If you can look past the black holes, the rogue asteroids, the gym teachers, and that paper boy who keeps throwing your magazines into the bushes, it's a simple place most of us can call a happy home. It's a good thing. However, even the obviously non-sentient universe has a sense of irony. You see, the universe is going to end. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not 10120 years from now, but it will happen. One of the ways science predicts our inevitable demise is by pissing off God. But that's another story. Instead, another way that science predicts the universe will cease to function is through the "heat death of the universe" theory.

Hm. There is a huge difference between adult and teen fiction. One, being content. Small observation (and I could be wrong; I gave up on teen fiction years ago), but most teen fiction deals with things teens can relate to - like school, issues with friends, family, acceptance, coming of age, first love... like, typical "teen" things.

Adult fiction has a broader range, I think because there's more to work with. A teenager probably doesn't have the slightest interest in (or clue of) things like plotlines that deal heavily in things that take years to get a handle of, like raising a family, climbing the social/career ladder, etc.

Reading appeal aside, I think there's a bit more freedom in adult fiction - that is, less restriction in keeping things "age appropriate" (one reason why I write it). So writers can throw in witty observations about the office or clever sexual innuendo (not that either of those are exclusive to adult fiction) ...but again, less worry about if it crosses the line when dealing with a younger audience. The romance genre in particular has a lot more freedom - from trashy to eloquent...I think it's a lot more tame in the teen genre.

The same rule might apply to the author's writing style. I don't think many teen novels have the vocabulary of a college graduate. Not to say that teen novels are filled with watered down slaughter of the English language, but it might be more simplified in the teen genre, without the vocabulary that will make you reach for the dictionary. Likewise, there are probably some adult fiction writers that don't feel the need to water their elegant prose down and can write with the same vocabulary that makes you reach for the dictionary.

As for success, I have no idea if teen or adult fiction is more successful than the other. In popularity, I might hand it to the teen novels, for their quick success (JK Rowling, anyone?). In terms of staying power and literary success, I'd have to hand it to adult fiction. There are exceptions for both fields of course...JK Rowling being one of them, actually...
