Origins of Names and Places; How I decided on names for my story

Fantasy Writer Posts: 342 Group: Writers+ Member #9 Joined: Mar 23, 2008	I forgot to mention in my first topic that the name of the story is "The Secret of the Forest". Sorry about that. Anyway, I had plenty of ideas for the characters and their personalities, but I wanted names that were unique and not commonly used so I went online and found sites that listed meanings and origins of names. I came up with a list and almost all of the characters and even places in the book have a meaning behind their names that reflects their personality. So as I post tidbits of my story in this page, I though someone might be interested in this list. BE WARNED! Some of the names of the characters have meanings that reflect their personality as it changes so it may or may not spoil something, just a little warning. I also included a few definitions I came up with that explain some terms. They are explained in the story but for some reason I included them early on when I started writing it. Also, formatting got messed up a bit, so the pronunciation guide (which was never really accurate anyway) isn't useful. Anyway, here it is! Glossary of Names and Places Below is a list of names and places in this book. Most of the names in this book originated from or are actual names from other dead or still used languages. Mage (mage), (plural Magi)-powerful wizards or sorceresses. Druid (dru-id)-sorcerers who act as one with nature. Each druid can take on the form of a different animal. NAMES: 1.Asha (ah-shuh) from the Sanskrit asa meaning "hope". 2.Ballard (ball-ard)-brave and strong 3.Burchard (burr-chard)-castle strong 4.Cinaed (sin-ay-ed)-Gaelic name, which means “born of fire”. 5.Hedda (hed-uh)-diminutive of Scandavian name meaning “battle, war” 6.Hypatia (hih-pat-ee-ya)-Greek name meaning “highest” 7.Ognyan (ahg-nee-en)-bulgarian name derived from the word ognen, which means “fire”. 8.Perdita (purr-dee-ta)-literary name of Latin meaning “lost” 9.Pia (pee-yuh)-Italian name meaning obedient 10.Saloma (suh-lome-uh)-biblical name originating from Salome meaning “peace” 11.Selima (sell-im-uh)-peace 12.Sandor (shan-door)-Hungarian form of Alexander, meaning defender of mankind. 13.Thaddeus (thad-ee-us)-biblical name meaning courageous 14.Titus (tie-tus)-title of honor 15.Truman (trew-man) Old English word meaning “loyal one” 16.Zale (zay-ul)-strength of the sea PLACES: 1.Archeron (are-chare-on)-means “river of woe” 2.Blagden (blag-den)-Old English word for “dark valley” 3.Bradshaw (brad-shah)-broad forest 4.Hildegard (hill-de-guard)- Old German word meaning “stronghold” 5.Orville (or-vill)-Means “town of gold” 6.Sumaya (su-may-uh)-arabic name meaning “high above” Edited by Mythic, Mar 30 2008, 04:13 PM.
