Do you think that as time goes by, there are less and less good writers, and more and more bad writers? Is it always about the same amount?

I'm not sure. Most people say writing is getting worse compared to the 'good-ole days', but I think that is because, back then, publishers were more picky about what and who they published, where nowadays, anyone can publish anything. Self-publishing lets through a lot of rubbish but there are many gems out there on the shelves. Maybe we're all too picky and don't notice them amongst the rubbish?

The devolution of writing may come from the devolution of the English language. People had a completely different way of speaking back in say, the Victorian age. Look at the English language now. Half of what's used is either slang or netspeak.

Like, my favorite series, the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, is written in a very informal "street" style, with slang and even abbreviations like SOL thrown in. Not that all of the English language is devolving into something that can be summed up to netspeak's omgwtfbbq, but the english language is a lot simpler than it was a hundred years ago.

Ah, but you see, everyone thinks that. I know that in England at least, 100 years ago, only rich, high class people were able to write books and publish their works. The lower classes which would have gad their own slang, mostly couldn't read or write and certainly would never be published, so they didn't get the chance pople do now.

Anyone of any class or wealth can write and publish a book nowadays, slang included, so it seems like the nations have simplified English, when it's probabaly the same. Nobody really talked like they do in Shakespeare's plays, they had a laugh down the pub after watching the show. :P It's just he had the power to record words where a peasant didn't.

This could be fought either way, really.

Point of opinion. There's nothing much left to say. As for simplified and slang English, I think it's always been around, just in different ways. Like culture.. many celebrate Christmas, but it's got different names, and there are different traditions to each.
Faith. Hope. Love. Vengeance. Heart. Pain. Charisma. Fate.

I agree with Lykaios, and I would like to elaborate on that theory.
Writing novels and such has a huge influence around everyone in the world (obviously), and the ideas they have come from the brilliant writers from the "good ol' days". Only these people who write the stories twist the main idea around to make it seem original.
I'm not saying that absolutely everyone reflects upon that method, but for some... I think. ^^; Ha, ha.

Now, I WOULD say that there is no such thing as a "bad" writer. But after some time, I guess I really should change that view.

Read a few extracts of young writers, they're not good. Now, I'm not saying that this is concluding that all youth is terrible, but it seems that the publishing criticism has gone down. Especially due to the possibility of being able to self-publish these days, it's gone a bit down hill. Especially with the rise in teen fic.
Everybody loves the universe. If you can look past the black holes, the rogue asteroids, the gym teachers, and that paper boy who keeps throwing your magazines into the bushes, it's a simple place most of us can call a happy home. It's a good thing. However, even the obviously non-sentient universe has a sense of irony. You see, the universe is going to end. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not 10120 years from now, but it will happen. One of the ways science predicts our inevitable demise is by pissing off God. But that's another story. Instead, another way that science predicts the universe will cease to function is through the "heat death of the universe" theory.

Oh, by the way. I forgot to add that most younger writers tend to have Mary-Sue characters, as if that popular character is them. I just stop reading when I figure that out, lol.
My main novel pet-peeve usually revolve around the characters. I don't know why I mostly concentrate on that though O.o

I've seen the rule for fanfiction applies to non-fan writing as well: 90% of everything is crap, but it's that remaining 10% that's worth dying for.

And people bash fanfiction. Ha! Non-fan has the same problems!
