After initial unrest in mid 1848 due to the reallocation of land under wastelands ordinance, a number of peasants and artisans staged an insurrection in Dambula. It was unable to attract mass appeal due to a lack of general discontent with the economic situation, with ongoing demand for Ceylonese cinnamon and coffee from British markets.
The rebels attempted to march on Kandy on the 26th of July, but were met by a company of British troops at Kurunegala and dispersed by several volleys of rifle fire. The surviving ring leaders were apprehended over the course of the next two months, tried and sentenced to death for high treason, and hanged, drawn and quartered.
