Work on the Washington Monument in the city of Washington, D.C. has officially commenced. When completed the memorial will be the tallest structure in the world.

Plans to honor the late General George Washington, "Father of the Country" and First President of the United States, have been underway virtually since his death in 1799. No figure in American history is today revered as much, and none has enjoyed the near universal level of contemporary esteem, as the "American Cincinnatus." Throughout the past sixteen years, the Washington National Monument Society has been organizing funding and planning designs for a memorial befitting a figure of Washington's stature, but it was not until this year that the project was given final approval to commence building.

Washington's monument will consist of a 600-foot-tall obelisk surrounded by a Greek-style colonnade, with statues of Revolutionary War heroes inside. Originally, the intersection of the U.S. Capitol and the White House was chosen for its location, but the ground there proved too unstable and the monument was moved slightly to the east.

Excavation on the foundation is already underway and the first cornerstone will be laid this July 4th.

"For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory."
- Zachary Taylor
