November 3, 1846

The midterm elections of 1846 saw the Democrats lose many seats in the House, a product of the contentious political atmosphere surrounding the war with Mexico. Some citizens were also displeased with President Polk's handling of leading domestic issues, such as banking and tariffs, and this enabled Whigs to make a stronger stand than was anticipated.

The Democrats did however gain Texas's new seats, adding to their lead in the Senate.

Several seats remain vacant due to resignations and deaths, and with the expected admittance of Iowa as the 29th state next month, it is possible the Whigs' slim House majority will be trimmed even further.

Senate Election

Democratic Party: 34 seats (+2)
Whig Party: 20 seats (+0)
Independents: 1 seat (+1)
Vacant: 1 seat

House Election

Whig Party: 114 seats (+39)
Democratic Party: 108 seats (-33)
Independents: 3 seats (+3)
American Party: 1 seat (-5)
Vacant: 2 seats

"For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory."
- Zachary Taylor
