June 8, 1845 Andrew Jackson, general of the United States Army, hero of New Orleans, seventh President of the United States, and founder of the modern mass democratic movement in America, died at his home in Tennessee on Sunday evening. He was 78 years old. Although it was widely reported that General Jackson (as he preferred to be called) had suffered recurrent illnesses in the past year, only last week did it become "more and more certain that [his] earthly career" was "rapidly drawing to a close." News of Old Hickory's death was met with great outpouring of grief around the country. Jackson's lifetime accomplishments assuredly make him one of the titans in American history: As a young man in the Revolution, he served the fledgling American army as a courier and suffered harsh treatment at the hands of the British as a prisoner of war. He helped draft Tennessee's state constitution 20 years later and then served as its U.S. House representative. He famously led troops in the War of 1812 against the Indian uprisings and defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. He later campaigned against the Seminoles in Florida before becoming president in 1828 after the first "log cabin" campaign. He was overwhelmingly reelected four years later, using his eight years in office to support the growth of popular democracy, promote the national Union over sectionalism and nullification, and combat institutions he saw as dangerous to individual liberty, including the national bank. The Nashville Union perhaps best summed up many Americans' feelings about Jackson's late departure when it declared, "Having filled a large space in the world's view, his loss will be deeply felt, and his memory brightly cherished throughout the Union; but in Tennessee, where the glorious days of his youth were passed -- from whose borders he chased the savage -- whose land he has ennobled and amongst whom the evening of his days has been spent, we feel his loss as that of a Father -- One of the last and noblest of the gallant band of Pioneers who planted Liberty and Civilization in our land." |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
