An Empire for Liberty

November 8, 1842

The Congressional elections of 1842 inflicted disastrous losses on the Whigs, obliterating their majority in the House and trimming their Senate lead to two seats.

Whigs had hoped to rally public support against President Tyler's unpopular policies, but his vetoes contributed to widespread dissatisfaction with both elected branches of government and the deadlock over the tariff and bank bills convinced many citizens that Whigs were incapable of governing. A large number of first time voters recruited by the Harrison campaign two years ago grew disillusioned with politics and simply stayed home. Finally, redistricting following the 1840 census played heavily into Democrats' favor, particularly in urban areas.

Senate Election

Whig Party: 27 seats (+0)
Democratic Party: 25 seats (+1)

House Election

Democratic Party: 150 seats (+49)
Whig Party: 69 seats (-70)
Law and Order Party: 2 seats (+2)
Independent Democrats: 1 seat (+0)
Independent Whigs: 1 seat (+1)

"For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory."
- Zachary Taylor
