June 10, 1842 As part of a series of initiatives aimed at generating new growth and promoting industrialization, several east coast states have proposed tax incentives for all companies utilizing steam-related technology. These include various shipping lines, railroads, and textile mills that rely heavily on steam-driven machinery or steam engines. Businesses meeting the requirements will see an average reduction of 15% in their annual state taxes for the next three years. Additionally, any new corporations that are chartered within the same period will receive a one year tax deferral to free up more of their starting capital for merchant activity. The initiatives came after state governments experienced growing calls for them to do more in promoting economic recovery, but were not without controversy. Some citizens decried tax cuts in a year when many local treasuries are already experiencing shortfalls. |

July 20, 1842 The recent craze over steam power has prompted a number of Northeast merchants to begin looking into expanding their share of the transatlantic market. Particular attention has been paid to a long-neglected idea of Mr. Junius Smith, who called for the establishment of a joint Anglo-American steam line between Liverpool and New York in 1832. Although the plan was never implemented and has since been rendered moot by the development of British steamers, there is growing interest in extending his idea to ports on the European continent. A number of capitalists have approached key figures in the French and Prussian shipping industries to inquire as to the possibility of opening joint passenger lines. Initial reports indicate that there is strong interest on the part of both nations, including portions of their governments. |

May 20, 1845 Since the Panic of 1839 ended there has been marked growth within the American rail industry. A number of new railroad companies have been chartered since 1842, fueled by access to cheap iron and plentiful labor. The states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York witnessed the largest growth, and now several state legislatures are considering various incentives to stimulate development even further. Ohio's legislature recently granted a charter for the new Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, which will connect Allegheny City, Pennsylvania to Crestline, Ohio, making it one of the first true interstate railways. Like many other new railroads, it will use the so-called "British standard" for its gauge, due to the number of locomotive imports from England. Other states have shown interest in similar interstate connections due to the larger markets and ease of access they inherently provide. Some national writers have also urged their development as a means of furthering the continental Union. |

August 30, 1848 With the influx of new settlers to the West now reaching epic proportions, many shipping lines have begun chartering regular voyages to San Francisco to capitalize on Gold Rush fever. These include several transatlantic lines, such as the Prussian-American Company, which are offering emigrants fleeing the economic and political devastation of Europe special rates for a new start in America. A number of western states have also expanded their settlement promotion schemes to stimulate the sale of equipment and land. |
