March 1842 The victory of the German Confederation and its allies over the Russian Empire has brought a wave of patriotism and nationalism to Prussia, Austria and the other German states. Talk of "one German people" and "one German nation" is gaining ground as intellectuals and commoners alike are redefining their political identity within Europe. |

With the nations of Wurttenberg and Hannover already in the Zollverein, and in militairy and foreign policy union with Prussia. Prussia has invited the monarchs of these two nations to Berlin to see how these three countries can further strengthen relationships. |

August 1842 As a result of these talks between Hannover and Prussia, the first has been invited to join the Zollverein. A answer is expected next month. |

February 1848 The news of the fall of the French monarchy are being met in Berlin with astonishment and joy. The February weather is beautiful and it is certainly stimulating discussion. Anyone who has got his hands on a newspaper has to stand on a chair and read it out loud. Book clubs, and discussion societies are all talking about the matter. Berlin is buzzing. |
