November 11, 1839 Today the Virginia Military Institute was founded, the newest military academy in the United States and the first to receive non-federal state support. It is located on the grounds of the Lexington state arsenal in the town of the same name. The Institute's mission will be to educate future officers for the United States' armies, equipping them with all the knowledge needed in modern warfare and creating a reserve body of citizen-soldiers who will be prepared to defend their country in times of national peril. Francis H. Smith, a graduate of West Point (class of 1833), has been selected to lead the new college as its first superintendent. |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
