October 13, 1837 A powerful hurricane has devastated coastal regions along the American South, including parts of Louisiana and Florida. Named for the British ship HMS Racer, which spotted the storm in the Caribbean last month, it made landfall in Mexico near the Rio Grande on October 2 before turning east and heading over Texas and the Gulf of Mexico to Venice, Louisiana. From there it passed over New Orleans, inundating the city with two feet of water, before continuing over the Gulf Coast to Pensacola, Florida, and finally over land through the Carolinas. Damage is estimated at $2,000,000, centered mainly in Louisiana and the cotton-growing states that were hit hardest. The hurricane entered the Atlantic Ocean on October 10 and was last reported heading northeast. |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
