An Empire for Liberty

June 12, 1837 A large riot broke out in Boston yesterday between a group of native Yankee Americans and Irish immigrants. The melee began when several firefighters returning from a call in Roxbury encountered an Irish funeral procession along Broad Street. The men were said to be somewhat intoxicated at the time, which undoubtedly contributed to the ensuing exchange of insults and physical confrontation. Subsequent attempts by other firefighters to break up the fight only exacerbated the situation, and by day's end the riot had grown to involve more than 1,000 people. Peace was restored only after Mayor Samuel A. Eliot called in ten companies of the Massachusetts militia to maintain order. In spite of the riot's size and duration, no one was killed in the fighting. |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
