April 20, 1837 Former Massachusetts state senator Horace Mann has accepted the position of secretary of the newly created board of education, the first such statewide board in the country. Mr. Mann has no previous background in the field of education, but has approached his latest duties with a strong determination to improve the quality of Massachusetts schools. His plans include visiting personally each school in the state over the next few months to gain a fuller understanding of their organization and methods, as well as issuing a series of annual reports detailing the progress made and the steps yet to be taken in them. A second, long-term idea of Mann's involves an experimental "normal school" system for training future teachers. |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
