June 28, 1836 Former president and statesman James Madison has died at his home in Montpelier, Virginia, at the age of 85. One of the central figures of the early Republic, Madison was widely known for authoring the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Essays; serving as Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson; representing Virginia in the U.S. House from 1789 to 1797; acting as Rector of the University of Virginia following Jefferson's death in 1826; reviving the national Bank of the United States in 1816; and serving the young nation as its fourth chief executive from 1809 to 1817. Madison was the last of the Founding Fathers, and his death has marked a clear break with the Revolutionary generation of 1776. The nation mourns his loss even as it takes strength from the legacy of freedom that he and his contemporaries bequeathed to all Americans. |
Embassy of the United States of America ![]() "For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory." - Zachary Taylor | |
