The territory of Arkansas has been admitted into the Union as the 25th state. In accordance with the Missouri Compromise, slavery has been permitted to continue under the new state constitution without objection by Northern congressional leadership.

The territorial capital of Little Rock has been chosen as the new state capital and an election held to admit new senators and representatives into the United States Congress. Fort Smith will continue to serve as the de facto legal authority overseeing management of the neighboring Indian Territory.

Congress has authorized the official incorporation of the new Wisconsin Territory, as the Michigan Territory prepares to apply for statehood. The area of the new administrative region stretches from the western border of the Missouri River to the Great Lakes, encompassing over 200,000 square miles. President Jackson has appointed Henry Dodge governor of the territory and the first local legislative session is set to convene in Belmont this October.

Michigan has officially been admitted into the Union as the 26th state. The new state capital will remain in the city of Detroit, long the center of settlement and commerce as well as the seat of the former territorial government. Stevens T. Mason, elected in 1835, will continue in his capacity as governor.

Michigan's statehood had been delayed for several years due in part to a territorial dispute with Ohio, known locally as the Toledo War. Resolution of the boundary conflict came only last month, when the territorial government finally accepted a compromise brokered in Congress and ceded the Toledo Strip to Ohio. Land has not been the only controversy surrounding Michigan's admission, however; some congressmen are disputing the votes the state cast in the presidential election two months ago, a time when it was still officially a territory and had no voting representation in the electoral college. The dispute resembles those that followed Indiana's admission in 1817 and Missouri's in 1821 and is expected to be taken up by Congress next month when the electoral results are certified.

An agreement has been made with the chiefs of the Ioway, Sac and Fox tribes to purchase 3,149 square miles of land west of Missouri's border, to settle a number of territorial disputes between Indians and white settlers living in the region. William Clark presided over the negotiations at Fort Leavenworth, which resulted in the tribes being compensated with approximately $85,000 in exchange for the lands.

The new territory is almost as large as Delaware and Rhode Island combined and has been annexed by the state of Missouri.

New York City has announced it is acquiring several steam-powered fire engines from Britain as part of its plan to improve the local fire departments, following the destructive inferno of December 1835. Although these modern devices have been employed in places like London since 1829, New York has lagged far behind in their use, and its firefighting capabilities have suffered accordingly.

An additional state investigation into various unprofessional practices has commenced with the aim of reorganizing the volunteer companies into full-time units, as well as eliminating disruptive influences within the chain of command to improve response time and coordination. Finally, the state has commissioned a group of engineers to examine the prospect of constructing a new municipal water system, to avoid a repeat of the conditions which prevented the water in wells from being used during the 1835 fire.

The new territory's capital will be set at Burlington, the old seat of Wisconsin Territory, and the latter's will be moved to to the town of Madison in the Four Lakes region. Robert Lucas will assume the role of governor of Iowa.

The transition will officially go into effect on the fourth of next month.

Construction on the New York City sewer system has commenced following a two year review by state officials and the Common Council. Approval for the project came early this year after the Council, taking into account New York's rapid growth in the past decade, and the resulting increase in demand by city services as well as the rapid accumulation of filth in the streets, voted to finance a systematic improvement of the water supply. Planning began in early March for an initial 70 miles of underground pipework, which will take approximately five years to construct.

Despite some opposition from Democratic lawmakers, who argued against more spending in bad economic times, Governor William Henry Seward determined to go ahead with the project in the belief that it will provide new jobs for New Yorkers.

The decision has been hailed by many charitable groups working to improve conditions in slum neighborhoods, which are notorious for their filth and contaminated drinking water.

News of the formation of a new temperance group in Baltimore, Maryland has been spreading throughout the mid-Atlantic states and the District of Columbia. An organization known as the "Washingtonian Temperance Society" has been founded by half a dozen heavy drinkers at a local tavern to promote sobriety and recovery from excess consumption of intoxicating liquors. Although such groups are not unknown to America, as various temperance movements have been extant for half a century, the Washingtonians are unique in their emphasis on the individual over collective action by society. Their methods include group meetings and personal tales of struggles with alcohol, accompanied by mutual support for new members seeking to renounce liquor.

The arrival of Mr. Marcus Whitman in the East Coast has been generating marked public interest in the Oregon Country and the various Christian missions already engaged there. Whitman has met with the ABCFM (American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions), leaders of prominent newspapers, and members of Congress to press for increased aid to the settlement of Oregon. A large party of volunteers reportedly has taken up his request of support and a number of new ships were chartered to facilitate settlement via the Panama Railroad, which is scheduled to commence full operations soon. There is no word yet on what action the federal government may take to promote migration.

A treaty has been signed between the United States and the Chippewa tribes living in northwestern Michigan and the upper Wisconsin Territory. Forty-one chiefs and representatives of the Indians were involved in negotiations at La Pointe ceding land to American settlers in exchange for continued hunting and fishing rights.

The treaty is scheduled to be ratified and proclaimed by early next year.

The completion of the main sections of New York's modern sewer system has raised new awareness of the need for public sanitation. An effort is being made in other large cities to construct similar underground lines, which would safely carry waste away and provide clean drinking water to public and private buildings. Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and even the Federal capital of Washington are all proposing comprehensive sewers and refuse collection modeled on New York's successful system.

January 8, 1845 - 30th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans

The city of New Orleans held celebrations today to mark 30 years since the Battle of New Orleans, the informal end of the War of 1812.

The battle itself took place after the signing of a peace treaty in London, but due to the slow transatlantic communication of those days news did not arrive until February 1815. Nonetheless, the incredibly lop-sided victory -- only a dozen Americans were killed while the British suffered 2,000 casualties in the assault -- sent waves of triumph and patriotism throughout the country. That an assorted group of frontiersmen and sailors could throw back far superior numbers of professional British redcoats vindicated the American martial spirit and proved the worth of the common citizen-soldier. The victory also seemed to avenge the 1814 attacks in the Chesapeake, since several of the units present at Bladensburg and Washington were present at New Orleans. The battle would later catapult Andrew Jackson to the presidency.

Rising tensions with Mexico have given the occasion special relevance in today's world, and several newspapers warned "Santa Anna's bandits" that they would face an even more devastating defeat if they continue to press their aggression against Texas.

The territory of Florida has been admitted as the 27th state of the Union. Its territorial capital at Tallahassee will become the state capital as the new state constitution goes into effect.

Elections will be held over the next two months to fill Florida's chief executive and legislative offices, including its two U.S. Senate seats and one U.S. House seat. Predominately Democratic during its territorial phase, it is expected that Florida will further tip the senatorial balance in favor of the Democrats and incoming President Polk.

Rebuilding continues in Pittsburgh after last month's great fire destroyed part of that city. It was said that the inferno started from an "act of carelessness," when "some washerwoman had built her fire in the yard, as more convenient than the house, and the wind carried the sparks to a frame stable adjacent."

The damage was not as bad as it might have been, thanks to upgrades to the fire department over the past half-decade following the lessons learned in the Great New York Fire. The city had acquired new steam firefighting machinery and expanded its water system on the model of New York. Nevertheless, many homes and businesses were destroyed, and neighboring towns began taking up a collection for the citizens' relief. The state legislature also decided to exempt the affected area from all state taxes through 1848.

Mr. Edward Everett, former U.S. ambassador to Great Britain and governor of Massachusetts, will travel to Prussia later this year to observe its educational system. Everett is the current President of Harvard University and has long been a supporter of public educational reform.

His mission will examine the Prussians' innovations of recent years and determine how the United States could benefit from similar systems.

Citizens of Alexandria, Virginia have voted to accept the proposed District of Columbia territorial retrocession south of the Potomac River. The land in question was ceded to the District in 1791 when the national capital was created, but has been subject to administrative neglect throughout the past half century due to various legal restrictions placed on Congress. During the past ten years assorted movements to return control of the area to Virginia gathered momentum, but Congress did not act on their proposals until this July.

President Polk certified the referendum and the Virginia General Assembly will debate whether to accept it when the new fall session begins.

Iowa officially has been admitted into the Union as the 29th state. The new state comprises only about a quarter of the former Iowa Territory, the extreme north and northwest having relapsed into unorganized status following a boundary adjustment.

Ansel Briggs has been elected governor and the former territorial capital at Iowa City will remain the seat of local government.

The entire U.S. east coast is abuzz with news of the ill-fated Donner Party, a settler expedition to California that became trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter of 1846-47.

The band was one of many pioneer wagon trains heading west along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails, but separated from its main group in late 1846 when it attempted to take a shortcut through the mountains to arrive in California before winter. In fact, the "shortcut" added about 150 miles to the journey, and the onset of winter stranded the unfortunate travelers high in the mountains without food. During the four harsh months that followed the party resorted to cannibalism to stay alive.

Two relief expeditions mounted in early 1847 failed, but a third finally got through on March 14. Of the 87 members of the Donner Party who had entered the mountains, only 48 had survived. One of them, Virginia Reed, wrote a letter to her cousin offering sober advice to all would-be settlers: "Never take no cutoffs and hurry along as fast as you can."

The Territory of Wisconsin has been admitted into the Union by Congress as the 30th state. This comes only twelve years after Wisconsin's official incorporation as a territory, with rapid development fueled by population growth along the Great Lakes. The event also marks the fourth admittance of a state in just the past three years.

Madison has been selected as the site of the state capital. Nelson Dewey, a Democrat, was voted the first governor in the general election on May 8th.

July 20, 1848 - Seneca Falls Convention

Approximately 300 people gathered in Seneca Falls, New York, yesterday and today for a women's rights convention organized by Quaker activist Lucretia Mott. Among the issues discussed were voting rights, legal restrictions currently placed on women, and women's roles in public life. One hundred members of the convention adopted the "Declaration of Sentiments," a document modeled on the United States Declaration of Independence which called for an end to inequality between the sexes.

Famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who attended the two-day event, called the declaration the "grand basis for attaining the civil, social, political, and religious rights of women" in America. Mainstream newspapers were not so amused, finding the entire affair "shocking" and "unnatural."
