An Empire for Liberty

May 1, 1836

The debate over slavery and emancipation has been increasing throughout the past few months, and various legislatures in the Upper South are considering whether to increase funding for the American Colonization Society and its establishments in Liberia.

Virginia's emancipation-colonization program, originally proposed five years ago in the wake of Nat Turner's uprising, has again attracted the interest of some state representatives. The House of Delegates will consider whether to reopen the plan pursuant to the January 1832 resolution that further action "should await a more definite development of public opinion."

The idea has attracted the support of many delegates who are not in favor of immediate abolition but who desire a comprehensive resolution that would not upset hard-line advocates of slavery.

"For more than half a century, during which kingdoms and empires have fallen, this Union has stood unshaken. The patriots who formed it have long since descended to the grave; yet still it remains, the proudest monument to their memory."
